It’s not too late to book a table at one of our fellow Amsterdam Mamas’ favourite Indian restaurants. Amrita Suri (re)shares recommendations for her favourite Indian fare in the city.

Valentine’s day is just around the corner, but there is still time to plan the perfect evening out with your significant other, friends or the whole jingbang. As someone who grew up in a big family with food at the centre of every celebration, a delicious, sumptuous meal spells l-o-v-e for me. That said, I recommend the following Indian cuisine restaurants which, in my opinion, will make fabulous dining options for anyone looking to make their Valentine’s day extra special.

The Indian Kitchen
One of my all time favourites, this restaurant offers a huge selection of authentic Indian dishes, and an enviable wine/cocktail list. That’s not all, the interiors are intimate and perfect for a romantic meal with your beloved. Just be sure to make a reservation for your visit as the restaurant can get pretty busy.

India Poort
Operating in two locations, India Poort aan de Amstel in Ouderkerk and India Poort Utrecht, this restaurant has it all. Located on the waterfront, this restaurant offers delicious Indian fare with a view of the water! They have a nice wine collection and offer cocktails too. The interiors are warm, cozy and will decidedly add to the feeling of love on Valentine’s Day. Take a romantic walk by the water after dinner to round off the day of love.

Atchaya
Simple and home-like, this restaurant is perfect for celebrating Valentine’s Day with family and friends. I like the ‘unembellished’, true flavours of South-Indian cuisine offered in an unassuming yet intimate ambience. I’m sure that a visit to Atchaya will make your tummy and your company very, very happy. Just a heads up that they do not serve alcohol.

Anjappar
Located in central Amsterdam, Anjappar offers a delightful selection of Chettinad cuisine. There is a huge variety of delicacies to choose from and they offer a fair selection of beer and non-alcoholic drinks. A big plus is that you can take a romantic walk to Museumplein after dinner. Little tip: Try the chicken 65, though it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Mayur
Another old-time favourite and fabulous Indian restaurant located in central Amsterdam, Mayur, offers authentic taste, intimate ambiance and a wide selection of drinks. Make sure to book yourself a table if you plan to have a cozy evening at Mayur on Valentine’s Day.

These are a few of my suggestions, from the wonderful (and extensive) selection of Indian restaurants that have popped up in and around Amsterdam in the past few years. A meal at one of these will make Valentine’s Day especially memorable, for you as well as your special other(s). Life is short, so let’s make sure to celebrate love at every opportunity. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Ready to go on a gastronomical journey with this Amsterdam Mama as she shares all her favourite, authentic Indian eateries in Amsterdam? Get ready to get hungry!

Food is memory.

The aroma of a familiar dish can transport one back in time as no time machine can. As someone who grew up in India but has lived an international lifestyle for the past 20 odd years, I recognise the role of “home food” in our lives. I don’t mean food as sustenance of the physical body, but food as sustenance of the soul, as a connection to home. Most of us hold our “mum’s cooking” as the highest standard of food, followed closely by the local baker, dhaba (small restaurant), and halwai (sweets shop). The whiff of authentic Indian food recreates fond childhood memories: the gastronomic joy from my favourite meal for dinner or even the dismay of forcing vegetables down before rewarded with dessert.

As in most countries, food is richly associated with celebrations in India. A country so big and diverse naturally offers a continent’s worth of cuisine and then some. Outside of India, Indian cuisine generally equates to Tandoori chicken, basmati rice, naan, samosa, and papadam. While these foods are popular in India, they do not even skim the surface that is the authentic Indian cuisine.

To help you navigate through this diverse cuisine, here’s a list of my favourite (with some input from friends) authentic Indian restaurants in and around Amsterdam. Most of them offer takeaway and delivery services via thuisbezorgd.nl, Ubereats, and Deliveroo.

Restaurants

The Indian Kitchen

Hands down, The Indian Kitchen in Amstelveen is a family favourite. With delicacies like butter chicken, biryani, kebabs, koftas, and tandoori naan on offer, what’s not to like? My personal recommendation is to try the butter chicken with garlic naan and the kebab platter if you are a non-vegetarian. Go for the vegetarian starter platter followed by Kadhai paneer, dal makhani, and naan if you want to stay away from meat.

Location – Karel Doorman weg 6-8, 1181WE, Amstelveen, 020 6415 340

Indian Streetfood & Co.

When I crave spicy, flavourful Indian street food, I pop into the Indian Streetfood & Co. I can confidently say that this place serves some of the most authentic tasting Indian Street food I’ve had outside of India. Start sampling from the top of the menu and try everything, for no one (or five) dishes will do justice to the range of flavours on offer. The chaat platter is an excellent place to start and a bowl of fresh, piping hot Jalebi to end.

Location – Karel Doormanweg 16, 1181WE, Amstelveen, 020 441 4661

India Port

This restaurant has it all in two locations, India Port aan de Amstel in Ouderkerk and India Port Utrecht. Both sites offer delicious food with beautiful views as they are located on the waterfront. In addition to the usual Indian fare, their speciality is the great Indian Thaali. Available in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, this is a “one-stop-try-it-all-shop” offering many dishes to try.

Location – Amstelzijde 53, 1184 TZ, Amstelveen, 020 337 4427 & Oudegracht aan de Werf 144, 3511 AZ, Utrecht, 030 233 2666

Tummy Treats

Head to Tummy Treats in Westwijk (or order online) for an authentic South Indian food experience. Although their menu boasts a wide range of dishes from all over India, their Dosa, Uttapam, Idli, and other South Indian dishes are the stars of the show. Their paneer tikka and the aaloo kulchas are also mouthwatering. Try to stay away from Dosa if ordering takeaway or delivery as it will get soggy, losing its crispness.

Location – Westwijk 88, 1187LV, Amstelveen, 020 2386399

Pind Punjabi

Pind Punjabi translates to Village from Punjab. True to its name, this restaurant serves delightfully authentic North Indian cuisine. I have been here only once, but that maiden visit was enough to impress this genuine foodie. Try the Tandoori Sizzler for starters.

Location – Van Woustraat 240, 1037NC, Amsterdam, 020 3583086

Sizz Indian Fusion

As the name suggests, Sizz is an Indian fusion cuisine restaurant. What makes it unique is the innovative combination of traditional Indian spices and herbs to develop distinctive and delicious dishes. Along with the eclectic mix of food, what caught my fancy was the food presentation and, of course, the yummy cocktails.

Location – Weteringschans 187C HS, 1017XE, Amsterdam, 020 737 3450

Mayur

Established in 1981, Mayur was one of the first Indian restaurants in Amsterdam. Albeit a bit pricier than its contemporaries, this place stands apart because of its ambience and food quality. Try the tasting menu if you are overwhelmed by the choices. We had the vegetarian Thali and absolutely loved it!

Location – Korte Leidsedwarsstraat 203, 1017RB, Amsterdam, 020 623 2142

Tulsi

Tulsi Indian restaurant is a fine dining restaurant and offers indoor and terrace seating. I found it a pleasant place and liked their special menus for two, four, and six people. It gave us a chance to try out various dishes, and it was easier on the pocket. Try the Pani Puri for starters for an explosion of flavours.

Location – Van Woustraat 212, 1073 NA, Amsterdam, 020 331 6403

I am sure more places also serve great Indian food, but I wanted to recommend only the places I have tried. As a special mention, I would like to add the food truck, Momo Bar in Amstelveen, as a must-visit for momos. Although momos are traditionally a Nepalese dish, we have adopted it as one of our favoured street foods in the north of India.

Sara Hildebrandt offers first-hand tips and places to go for gluten-free living in and around Amsterdam.

I have been gluten-free for over seven years since developing food intolerances, after having my first child. Currently, I also live dairy-and-egg-free.

I was spoiled coming from the San Francisco Bay Area. Eating there was a dream with plenty of options for all kinds of diets, so understandably, I was nervous about moving to Amsterdam and the gluten-free choices on offer. It is actually better than I expected, and each year the options expand.

Gluten Allergy or Intolerant?

Gluten is an umbrella term referring to proteins found in wheat, rye and barley. Varieties of wheat include wheatberries, durum, emmer, semolina, spelt, farina, farro, graham, and einkorn. Gluten is a protein that acts as a glue; helping these foods to maintain their shape.

A serious gluten allergy is known as Celiac’s Disease. This is a hereditary auto-immune disorder where the ingestion of gluten causes damage in the small intestines, which prevents nutrients from being absorbed properly into the body.

Gluten intolerance or sensitivity, on the other hand, includes symptoms such as bloating, gas, abdominal pain, weight gain, diarrhoea/constipation, brain fog, joint pain, numbness in your limbs, and fatigue.

Of course, it is best not to self-diagnose but to seek medical advice from your huisarts (general practitioner).

Naturally Gluten-Free Foods

Fortunately, there here are many gluten-free foods available to replace wheat, rye and barley. It is important to note though that cross-contamination during processing is possible, which may result in these alternatives containing traces of gluten.

Rice

Cassava

Corn/Maize

Soy

Potato/Sweet potatoes/Yam

Tapioca

Beans

Sorghum

Quinoa

Millet

Buckwheat groats (also known as kasha)

Arrowroot

Amaranth

Teff

Flax

Chia

Yucca

Gluten-free oats

Nut flours

Fruits

Vegetables

Meat and poultry

Fish and seafood

Dairy

Beans, legumes, and nuts

Gluten-Free Flour Alternatives

Almond

Buckwheat

Coconut

Chickpea

Oat *(make sure it is a brand that states gluten-free as oats are usually cross-contaminated with wheat)

Teff

Tigernut

Quinoa

Tip: Ekoplaza sells almost all of these alternative flours and more. Try using tijgernotenmeel (tigernut flour) in baking. It can be substituted for all-purpose flour or even a gluten-free flour blend. It is also nut-free!

Grocery Stores

Most of the grocery store chains (Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Ekoplaza and Marqt) have a gluten-free section. In Amsterdam, I prefer the Albert Heijn at Olympic Stadium and the Ekoplaza on Jan Pieter Heijestraat for the biggest selection.

Tip: Check the bakery or freezer section for additional gluten-free options. Ekoplaza offers a standing fresh gluten-free bread order, delivered to your local shop. There are more gluten-free items available online at Albert Heijn and Ekoplaza .

Shops/Online

Restaurants

Mastino Pizza, De Pijp

This pizzeria only serves gluten-free pizza with vegan options. You can still opt for mozzarella if you don’t want vegan cheese. This is the best gluten-free pizza crust I have had in Amsterdam.

Eat Well, Do Good, Centrum/Oud-Zuid

Great place for breakfast, brunch or lunch. The menu lists exactly what is in each dish, so it is easy to navigate without asking lots of questions.

Gustatio Amsterdam, near Vondelpark

Delicious gluten-free pasta. Great for kids.

De Italiaan, Oud-West

Another great option for gluten-free pizza. Great for kids.

I love Sla, Centrum/various

My favorite place for salads. Everything is gluten-free and mostly vegan.

Pancakes Amsterdam, Centrum

You can enjoy gluten-free pancakes and you won’t know the difference.

Bagels & Beans, various

Try their gluten-free bagels!

Munch, Oud-Zuid

A wonderful place for meals-to-go and other gluten-free snacks.

Roots Amsterdam, Willemspark

Everything at this shop is wheat-free or gluten-free and vegan.

Coffee & Coconuts CT, De Pijp

A really fun place for breakfast or lunch. Lots of gluten-free options on the menu.

Tip: When making a reservation, mention that you or someone in your party is gluten-free or has a food allergy. It makes the restaurant experience that much more enjoyable if the restaurant is prepared ahead of time.

Nothing beats a creamy, delicious scoop of ice cream on a warm day. After extensive polling, we bring to you the Mamas’ favourite ice cream parlours in Amsterdam. Bring on the brain freeze!

It was a difficult job, but we have finally managed to reduce all the Amsterdam Mamas’ recommendations into a shortlist of 10 favourite ice cream outlets! It should be noted that the Ijscuypje chain, although not included below, deserves a special mention for featuring among the favourite ice cream stops in multiple districts. Highly recommended.

1. Ijsmanschap

Van Spilbergenstraat 2, West

Reportedly, the first popsicle shop in the Netherlands. Ijsmanschap’s concept started in New York and Tokyo, and arrived at Amsterdam in 2016. Their manifesto describes their philosophy from fair-trade to the simple joys of life! Besides offering a variety of popsicles, they also offer special toppings like crushed mixed nuts and juicy fruits. For coffee-lovers, their favorite supplier is Lot Sixty One. In addition to their main store, they have four more selling points in Amsterdam.

Open Monday to Friday, 13:00-22:00, and 12:00-22:00 at weekends.

2. IJssalon Da Vinci

Lindenlaan 145, Amstelveen

If you want your ice cream to be prepared by someone who has an actual university degree in making gelato, then this is the place for you. Rempco, one of the current owners, has a degree from Gelato University in Bologna. Their philosophy is simple and based on quality, taste and experience. Their ice cream comes in 30 different flavours and their sorbets are made with fresh fruit. For extreme indulgence, check out their ice cream cakes and bonbons. They also sell real Italian espresso and other hot beverages. Their ice cream bakfiets is available for hire for parties.

Open daily, 12:00-22:00.

3. Ijssalon Ijskoud de Beste

Meeuwenlaan 331, Noord

Desmond, the mastermind ice cream enthusiast behind the flavours of this shop, has an obsession with making every single product better than the day before. Besides the regular ice cream flavours, you can surprise yourself by finding new tastes every time you visit this shop. You can also create your own ice cream cake and offer suggestions for new (combinations) of tastes.

Amsterdam is a city where you find amazing pancakes…which is no surprise because Amsterdammers just can’t get enough of them! Read on for the best pancake options in town.

The Dutch pannenkoek is much larger and thinner than the American pancake, however, they are not as thin as French crepes. What’s also special is that instead of just being a breakfast dish, like in some countries, Dutch pancakes are mostly served as a main course at dinner time. In fact, it is very traditional to serve them during birthdays, and they are always a big hit.

Given the Dutch love of pancakes, the city of Amsterdam is full of really good pancake restaurants; each with their own unique recipes and special ‘twists’. You will find traditional pannekoeken, poffertjes (miniature puffy pankcakes), American pancakes, crêpes, and waffles – plain or jazzed up with toppings like bacon, apple, goat cheese, truffles, etc.

To help you narrow down your list of must-visit pancake restaurants in Amsterdam, here are the places that I highly recommend you try.

1. The Pancake Bakery

Prinsengracht 191

This establishment is one of the oldest in Amsterdam and still makes delicious pancakes. It was established in 1973 and continues to have a very loyal following of both locals and tourists. Some of their customers travel several miles and then wait in line to have a taste of their original pancakes.

You can expect a daily queue at The Pancake Bakery. The bakery itself looks amazing, with its 17th-century construction, but what everyone is after are the restaurant’s whopping pancakes that are available in several flavor combinations. You can order simple pancakes, as well as ones that have whipped cream, cherries, cinnamon, and other toppings.

2. Pancakes! Amsterdam

Berenstraat 38, Prins Hendrikkade 48, Prinsengracht 277

This restaurant is perfect for those who want their entire family to have delicious pancakes for breakfast. It has a very cozy atmosphere which makes it heel gezellig for a meal with friends and family. The restaurant also prides itself in its very lengthy menu and abundant choices. In addition to the traditional Dutch pancakes, you also find American pancakes, Mücver from Turkey, and the Russian Blini!

3. De Pannekoekkelder

Sint Luciensteeg 15

This unique pancake restaurant serves up pancake pizzas. Yes, you read that right – a pancake and pizza combined into one! With more than 70 items on the menu, you will surely have a blast eating a wide assortment of delicious pancake pizzas. If you want to be even more adventurous, you can try making your own pancake pizza with a choice of toppings that best suit your palate and your personality.

4. The Japanese Pancake World

Tweede Egelantiersdwarsstraat 24a

For something unique and delicious, you should head to the Japanese Pancake World for pancakes that are full of unusual goodies. Unlike the traditional Dutch or the American-style pancakes, you can come here for the Osaka Deluxe. Also known as the “okonimiyaki”, this pancake contains jumbo shrimps, pork, scallops, cheese, and an assortment of exotic ingredients, making it nothing short of a culinary super adventure. Be prepared to use your chopsticks when eating here and make sure that your tummy is ready for a very hearty meal.

5. Pannenkoekenboot

Ms. van Riemsdijkweg

If you want to eat your pancakes while enjoying beautiful views of the city, then I suggest you dine on the famous Pancake Boat. This floating restaurant will take you on a tour of the canals while you enjoy a stack of delicious pancakes. The boat is docked at the NDSM wharf; if you choose the 75-minute cruise, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy a good sail and an endless supply of pancakes. Tickets are available on the boat deck, or on the restaurant’s website. This restaurant is ideal for family trips, children’s parties, or for whenever you want to have a romantic time with your partner, on the water, with good old fashioned food. Please check the restaurant’s website for availability.

6. Bakers & Roasters

Kadijksplein 16, Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat 54

This restaurant offers several delicious dishes that are very popular in Amsterdam and it’s lunch menu has received great reviews. For pancake lovers however, Bakers & Roasters makes one of the best American-style pancake stacks in the city! Be prepared for delicious pancakes with a side of bacon, and a generous serving of luscious Canadian maple syrup. And to top it off, this restaurant is also famous for its impressive, flat white coffee.

7. Crêperie Le Berger

Haarlemmerstraat 20

If you want crêpes then this is the address for you. This restaurant is especially enjoyable for those who like pesto, basil, sun-dried tomatoes, and goat cheese. The thin crepes and decadent toppings will satiate your refined, delicate flavour cravings. You can choose from a wide array of crepes at this restaurant – they have sweet crepes as well as savory ones. According to many locals, this is where you get the best crêpes in the city. For crêpe lovers, this should be at to the top of your list of pancake restaurants in the city.

8. Boerderij Meerzicht

Koenenkade 56

Do you enjoy pancakes with a Mediterranean twist? If yes, then you should head to this restaurant and get the Kebab pancake with delicious garlic sauce. In addition to Kebab pancake masterpiece, you should also try their own version of the traditional Dutch or American-style pancakes. The restaurant is located near the edge of the city park on Lakeview farm, making it a wonderful spot for children to see and interact with different animals like deer, peacocks, and goats. It’s an ideal place to go to for family outings.

9. Lunchroom Downtown

Reguliersdwarsstraat 31

If traditional Dutch pancakes are your thing, then you’ll definitely love going to the Lunchroom Downtown. They offer amazing Dutch mini pancakes, also called poffertjes – so delicious and decadent that you can eat them by the dozen and not even notice! This restaurant is also Amsterdam’s first openly gay café and has an amazing ambience.

10. De Carrousel Pannenkoeken

H.M. van Randwijkplantsoen 1

If you prefer to have pancakes for dessert rather than savory pancakes, then you best head to this restaurant and satisfy your sweet tooth. Built from an old-fashioned carousel, this restaurant is one of Amsterdam’s icons for pancakes and desserts. They also serve fresh Belgian waffles and poffertjes. Make sure to order a hot mug of Chocomel to complete your heartwarming and sweet dining experience.

What’s a party without a cake? No surprise that recommendations for custom-made birthday cakes is a popular question on our Facebook site. Frozen, Cars, unicorns, and rainbows – or any other fantasy our little ones are dreaming of, we’ve got the shortlist you need for suppliers.

Good to Know

Most of the recommended cake designers can do themes, meet dietary requirements, or any other special request.

As they are custom-made, they generally deliver at home or at a venue of your choice.

The pricing is normally made-to-order, but starts at about € 4,50 per serving for a basic cake and goes up from there depending on the complexity of the cake.

As it takes time to create a custom-made cake, place your order early. Slots fill up quickly, especially around the holidays.

Custom-Made Cakes

Cakeaholic ♦AMR 2016 Honourable Mention: Best Party Services Provider♦

Owner Sanna, also an Amsterdam Mama and mother of two boys, is originally from Finland and has been baking cakes professionally since 2012. She is a professional cake designer, an artist, and she uses her own recipes. This results in a delicious menu of not-your-everyday flavours. According to her website, she is a huge fan of mascarpone.

Canvas Cakery

Elke of Canvas Bakery describes herself of an autodidact. She was encouraged to try out baking and decorating after a disappointing experience with a custom-made cake she ordered for her son’s first birthday. She thought she could do better herself and has been baking and decorating ever since. At first, she baked only for friends but in recent years she has been working professionally in the Amstelveen area (pick-up only). She makes American-style sponge and buttercream cakes – decorated as the client requests – and mostly character cakes for kids.

English Cake Lady ♦AMR 2016 Winner: Best Party Services Provider♦

Amsterdam Mama Lucie Kenny has been running her cake-baking business since 2011. She can create a wide variety of designs for various occasions and caters for most dietary requirements.

Feast Party Food

Amsterdam Mama Niken Priyono is the owner behind Feast Party Food. Whether you are looking for a gender-reveal-cake, a birthday cake, or cupcakes – you’ll find loads of possibilities on her Facebook page.

Sweet Alchemy

Adoro Cucinare! (I love baking!) reads Mony’s Sweet Alchemy webpage. Besides cakes and cupcakes, Italian baker Monica also offers authentic Italian sweet creations. Monica is based on Ijburg.

Bakery Cakes

If you prefer to get your cake at a bakery, or were simply too late to order your custom-made cakes, these are the Amsterdam Mamas’ favourite stops. Many bakeries also deliver custom-made cakes on a pre-order basis (3-5 days in general).

3 Graefjes (Centrum)

A downtown favourite is the 3 Graefjes and their American bakery with two locations in the city centre, one on Rokin and the other one hidden behind the Nieuwe Kerk. Even if you are not looking for a cake, it’s a great stop for cake and a cup of coffee.

Arnold Cornelis (Amstelveen, Jordaan, and Zuid)

Arnold Cornelis has a history of over 40 years in Amsterdam; it’s an institution. Besides their regular great collection of cakes – some true classics – they also offer custom-made themed cakes. You can order in their shops or online. My personal favourites are the Christoffel, a traditional Dutch birthday cake from the South of Holland, and the strawberry slof. They also deliver for a small fee.

Holtkamp (Centrum)

Located in the Vijzelstraat since 1969, Holtkamp is another Amsterdam classic. Besides patisserie, they are also known for their famous Dutch croquettes and bitterballen. You can visit their store or go online.

Le Fournil de Sébastien (Zuid)

A true classic French bakery. What’s not to love? No fancy big cakes but classic French tartes. And while you are there, don’t forget to try their bread and madeleines. Go early to avoid queuing.

Majesteit Taart (Oost)

Majesteit Taart offers a great assortment of cakes that you can enjoy ‘responsibly’. This includes biological, gluten-free, (refined) sugar-free, dairy-free cakes. So for some guilt-free pleasures, it is a great stop. They also offer wedding cakes, themed cakes, children’s cakes, and regular cakes. Their photo gallery is absolutely stunning. We never knew guilt-free could look so good.

This list has been compiled from the recommendations of our members on the Amsterdam Mamas Facebook group. We couldn’t include all our community’s favourites in the listing, so for more recommendations, please check our Facebook thread.

There are few moments as indulgent as enjoying something sweet with a cup of coffee, so here’s a lovely list of our favourite cake stops in Amsterdam. You’re welcome.

Every mama has an urge for something sweet now and again, and we at AM have done our thorough research (dirty work, but someone had to do it…) and put together a list of some of the best stops for dessert in Amsterdam.

Centrum

Cafe Brandstof
Marnixstraat 341

It is not a cake place, but they serve the best cheesecake ever!

Café ‘t Papeneiland
Prinsengracht 2

Bill Clinton stopped off for apple tart at Papeneiland; I guess it must be their very casual atmosphere that he liked. This place has more of a classical bar feeling and their staff is really pleasant.

De Bakkerswinkel
Warmoesstraat 69

Quite traditional, but the variety promises something for every palate.

Drie Graffjes
Eggertstraat 1 | Rokin 128

Great for cakes and lunch! They carry all the typical american sweets, so if you are craving home-made cookies, cupcakes and very decadent, 5-layered cakes, this is the place to go.

Gartine
Taksteeg 7 BG

Amazing and unique flavours. Lemon meringue is to die for. AM Tip: Book in advance as Gartine is very popular! Some mamas have had luck dropping in at an off-peak time, as well.

Patisserie Holtkamp
Vijzelgracht 15

Very good if you just want something “to-go”.

Patisserie Kuyt
Utrechtsestraat 109-111

This place has been historically named as the best pâtisserie in the Netherlands and it surely deserves its place on this list. They have everything from wedding cases to sweet braid. So if you just feel like something sweet but do not know exactly what, this is a great place to try. Also, Utrechtsestraat is great for a little shopping, so while you are there…

Pluk
Reestraat 19

This place is just exquisite; their desserts are incredibly intense but their sandwiches are equally memorable. Overall, great location with beautiful decor and very chic concept store at the interior. AM tip: try the carrot cake; it is just amazing!

Pompadour Chocolaterie PatisserieTearoom
Huidenstraat 12

To die for (and have the added bonus of being friendly towards kids, even though there’s not a lot of space). Their petite cakes and GiNorMOus meringue puffs are truly incredible and their selection of in-house chocolates is remarkable; an amazing gift for a visit to a friend’s house (the kind of a friend who you really, really like.)

Van Ness Cupcake
Spuistraat 232

Not a cafe and only open 3 days a week, Van Ness Cupcakes are truly unique and go far beyond a classic cupcake.

Villa Zeezicht
Torensteeg 7

Go there for some of the tastiest apple pie in town.

Winkel 43
Noordermarkt 43

Professor Tulpplein 1

A great location with an amazing view. Also great for brunch

Boterham
Andreas Bonnstraat 2

Such a great place, beautiful and quiet. Good for working on your laptop too. Kate’s Slow Jam provides the jam and scones and the cakes are by The English Cake Lady.

Tony’s NY City Bagels

Baksels
Bilderdijkstraat 201

For home-made cakes you have to go to Baksels! Cheesecake, carrot cake, red velvet cake, chocolate mud cake, raspberry cheesecake, brownie cupcakes … So much choice and all equally delicious.

Bilder & de Clercq
De Clercqstraat 44

Cakes by the popular English Cake Lady. Try the salted caramel chocolate layer cake, it’s amazing! Also, it is a really cool concept store that carries a carefully-selected choice of foods, drinks and home decoration.

Il Tramezzino
Haarlemmerstraat 79

Try the zingy lemon cake.

Wijs West-Food, Shop & Kids Place
Bilderdijkstraat 62

They are a concept store so their range of cakes is limited but nevertheless very good. On the plus note: the space has a really nice playing area for kids, making it one of our favourite stops.

Albert Cuypsstraat 53

Just your everyday, friendly, high-quality bakery that you come to for a baguette. While you are there, try their “Choco Loco” cookie; it’s crazy good.

Bettina backt
Van Woustraat 188

De Bakkerswinkel
Roelof Hartstraat 68

Eerste Van der Helststraat 63

Parisian-style bakery specialized in patisseries with cream. AM favourite: raspberry mousse with pistachio creme and pistachio financier biscuit.

Taart van m’n Tante
Ferdinand Bolstraat 10

It is a sort of a quirky-meets-old-school place that your crazy aunt would run if she were a baker. Their choices are incredible and it is definitely worth the visit.
