There are few moments as indulgent as enjoying something sweet with a cup of coffee, so here’s a lovely list of our favourite cake stops in Amsterdam. You’re welcome.
Every mama has an urge for something sweet now and again, and we at AM have done our thorough research (dirty work, but someone had to do it…) and put together a list of some of the best stops for dessert in Amsterdam.
Centrum
Cafe Brandstof
Marnixstraat 341
It is not a cake place, but they serve the best cheesecake ever!
Café ‘t Papeneiland
Prinsengracht 2
Bill Clinton stopped off for apple tart at Papeneiland; I guess it must be their very casual atmosphere that he liked. This place has more of a classical bar feeling and their staff is really pleasant.
De Bakkerswinkel
Warmoesstraat 69
Quite traditional, but the variety promises something for every palate.
Drie Graffjes
Eggertstraat 1 | Rokin 128
Great for cakes and lunch! They carry all the typical american sweets, so if you are craving home-made cookies, cupcakes and very decadent, 5-layered cakes, this is the place to go.
Gartine
Taksteeg 7 BG
Amazing and unique flavours. Lemon meringue is to die for. AM Tip: Book in advance as Gartine is very popular! Some mamas have had luck dropping in at an off-peak time, as well.
Patisserie Holtkamp
Vijzelgracht 15
Very good if you just want something “to-go”.
Patisserie Kuyt
Utrechtsestraat 109-111
This place has been historically named as the best pâtisserie in the Netherlands and it surely deserves its place on this list. They have everything from wedding cases to sweet braid. So if you just feel like something sweet but do not know exactly what, this is a great place to try. Also, Utrechtsestraat is great for a little shopping, so while you are there…
Pluk
Reestraat 19
This place is just exquisite; their desserts are incredibly intense but their sandwiches are equally memorable. Overall, great location with beautiful decor and very chic concept store at the interior. AM tip: try the carrot cake; it is just amazing!
Pompadour Chocolaterie PatisserieTearoom
Huidenstraat 12
To die for (and have the added bonus of being friendly towards kids, even though there’s not a lot of space). Their petite cakes and GiNorMOus meringue puffs are truly incredible and their selection of in-house chocolates is remarkable; an amazing gift for a visit to a friend’s house (the kind of a friend who you really, really like.)
Van Ness Cupcake
Spuistraat 232
Not a cafe and only open 3 days a week, Van Ness Cupcakes are truly unique and go far beyond a classic cupcake.
Villa Zeezicht
Torensteeg 7
Go there for some of the tastiest apple pie in town.
Winkel 43
Noordermarkt 43
Another serious contender for the best apple pie in town.
Oost
Amstel Hotel
Professor Tulpplein 1
A great location with an amazing view. Also great for brunch
Boterham
Andreas Bonnstraat 2
Such a great place, beautiful and quiet. Good for working on your laptop too. Kate’s Slow Jam provides the jam and scones and the cakes are by The English Cake Lady.
Tony’s NY City Bagels
Jodenbreestraat 15
The carrot cake and the cheesecake is just soooo nice.
West
Baksels
Bilderdijkstraat 201
For home-made cakes you have to go to Baksels! Cheesecake, carrot cake, red velvet cake, chocolate mud cake, raspberry cheesecake, brownie cupcakes … So much choice and all equally delicious.
Bilder & de Clercq
De Clercqstraat 44
Cakes by the popular English Cake Lady. Try the salted caramel chocolate layer cake, it’s amazing! Also, it is a really cool concept store that carries a carefully-selected choice of foods, drinks and home decoration.
Il Tramezzino
Haarlemmerstraat 79
Try the zingy lemon cake.
Vlaamsch Broodhuys
Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat 64 | Haarlemmerstraat 108
For yummy tarts and great breakfast menus.
Wijs West-Food, Shop & Kids Place
Bilderdijkstraat 62
They are a concept store so their range of cakes is limited but nevertheless very good. On the plus note: the space has a really nice playing area for kids, making it one of our favourite stops.

Zuid
Bakken met Passie
Albert Cuypsstraat 53
Just your everyday, friendly, high-quality bakery that you come to for a baguette. While you are there, try their “Choco Loco” cookie; it’s crazy good.
Bettina backt
Van Woustraat 188
For those of us who are lactose or gluten intolerant, Bettina bakes the most amazing cakes with carefully-selected biological ingredients.
CT Coffee & Coconut
Ceintuurbaan 282-284
You will immediately fall in love with this place, especially if you try their strawberry vanilla pie. Great for brunch as well.
De Bakkerswinkel
Roelof Hartstraat 68
They have several locations over Amsterdam, this one being our favourite. It is a very relaxed place where, besides delicious cakes, you can also enjoy a great breakfast and casual lunch.
Huize van Wely
Beethovenstraat 72
An iconic place in Amsterdam South that also offers user-friendly online ordering.
Le Fournil de Sébastien
Olympiaplein 119
French-style bakery with a local twist.
My Little Patisserie
Eerste Van der Helststraat 63
Parisian-style bakery specialized in patisseries with cream. AM favourite: raspberry mousse with pistachio creme and pistachio financier biscuit.
Taart van m’n Tante
Ferdinand Bolstraat 10
It is a sort of a quirky-meets-old-school place that your crazy aunt would run if she were a baker. Their choices are incredible and it is definitely worth the visit.
