Want to furnish your child’s bedroom but lack time and energy to shop at brick and mortar stores? Here’s a handy list of eight great online furniture stores in the Netherlands.
Now that my daughter Helena is no longer a baby, I’m having to rethink the furniture in her room. She’s outgrown her cot bed, needs a proper wardrobe for her clothes and toy storage is becoming a “thing”. I love IKEA and Marktplaats as much as the next mum for low-cost furniture new and old, but I was keen to discover and share other online shops here that might offer some inspiration, and possibly gorgeous – yet low-cost – solutions. With the help of the Amsterdam Mamas, I found eight great places to get started.
1. Lief en Klein
Highlights for me personally included clothing racks in mustard yellow, dusky pink, and sea green. The toddler Flexa Play beds they have are top quality and look so inviting. If you’re looking to get the job done fast, you can buy a toddler bed with a mattress included for around €300. €€
2. Mondays Milk
Monday’s Milk stocks the most beautiful fabrics. They run regular sales on the cutest prints from Liberty fabrics to unusual Japanese brands. Fast response time to enquiries. €€
3. Musthaves
Their meubels-kinderkamer section is organised into price categories so you can easily browse according to your budget, and most of their furniture comes in at the €100-200 range. Good for plain, neutral-coloured storage chests, bedside cupboards and lovely, simple wooden beds by Woood. €€
4. Kids Depot
Great for bedroom soft furnishings, chairs and lighting. Their wire-diamond pendants in pretty colours are a modern twist for a child’s room and my eye was drawn to the felt animal-head wall decorations they offer. Who could resist the friendly blue elephant for example? They also have a good selection of rugs, including circular jute options at fair prices. €€
5. Kinderkamer in Stijl
For more traditional, beautifully made kids’ bedroom furniture, visit this easy to navigate site. Good range of cot beds and kids’ beds in classic styles, and oh-so-pretty wardrobes and cupboards in pastel shades with cute details. Upper price range (a small wardrobe is around €600) but with an outlet and discounted section. €€€
6. Kitsch Kitchen
This brand pops up all over Amsterdam and I’ve included it mostly because everything they have is so much fun. From bright-coloured storage baskets to retro hooks, brightly coloured rugs, vibrant oil-cloth and cool Chinese-style lanterns. This is a site where you can go wild with accessorising your kid’s room, without breaking the bank. €
7. Sissy-Boy
This Dutch high street clothing favourite is also great for kids’ bedroom storage solutions and rugs. They have pretty printed toy bags in a range of sizes (perfect Duplo/soft toy/laundry containers), nice cushions and decorative items. Good range of colourful rugs. Excellent seasonal sales. €€
8. IAmEva
Although this delightful store in the Jordaan has a focus on clothing, it also has many unique and whimsical children’s furniture accessories that can be purchased online when you are ready for the finishing touches. €€
Amy Miller
Amy moved from London to Amsterdam in 2013 for love. Now she mainly writes and looks after her daughter Helena, occasionally freelancing in her old job as a casting director and TV producer. She lives in De Pijp and has just launched a blog with two friends.
