What’s a party without a cake? No surprise that recommendations for custom-made birthday cakes is a popular question on our Facebook site. Frozen, Cars, unicorns, and rainbows – or any other fantasy our little ones are dreaming of, we’ve got the shortlist you need for suppliers.
Good to Know
- Most of the recommended cake designers can do themes, meet dietary requirements, or any other special request.
- As they are custom-made, they generally deliver at home or at a venue of your choice.
- The pricing is normally made-to-order, but starts at about € 4,50 per serving for a basic cake and goes up from there depending on the complexity of the cake.
- As it takes time to create a custom-made cake, place your order early. Slots fill up quickly, especially around the holidays.

Owner Sanna, also an Amsterdam Mama and mother of two boys, is originally from Finland and has been baking cakes professionally since 2012. She is a professional cake designer, an artist, and she uses her own recipes. This results in a delicious menu of not-your-everyday flavours. According to her website, she is a huge fan of mascarpone.
Canvas Cakery
Elke of Canvas Bakery describes herself of an autodidact. She was encouraged to try out baking and decorating after a disappointing experience with a custom-made cake she ordered for her son’s first birthday. She thought she could do better herself and has been baking and decorating ever since. At first, she baked only for friends but in recent years she has been working professionally in the Amstelveen area (pick-up only). She makes American-style sponge and buttercream cakes – decorated as the client requests – and mostly character cakes for kids.

Amsterdam Mama Lucie Kenny has been running her cake-baking business since 2011. She can create a wide variety of designs for various occasions and caters for most dietary requirements.
Feast Party Food
Amsterdam Mama Niken Priyono is the owner behind Feast Party Food. Whether you are looking for a gender-reveal-cake, a birthday cake, or cupcakes – you’ll find loads of possibilities on her Facebook page.
Sweet Alchemy
Adoro Cucinare! (I love baking!) reads Mony’s Sweet Alchemy webpage. Besides cakes and cupcakes, Italian baker Monica also offers authentic Italian sweet creations. Monica is based on Ijburg.
Bakery Cakes
If you prefer to get your cake at a bakery, or were simply too late to order your custom-made cakes, these are the Amsterdam Mamas’ favourite stops. Many bakeries also deliver custom-made cakes on a pre-order basis (3-5 days in general).
3 Graefjes (Centrum)
A downtown favourite is the 3 Graefjes and their American bakery with two locations in the city centre, one on Rokin and the other one hidden behind the Nieuwe Kerk. Even if you are not looking for a cake, it’s a great stop for cake and a cup of coffee.
Arnold Cornelis (Amstelveen, Jordaan, and Zuid)
Arnold Cornelis has a history of over 40 years in Amsterdam; it’s an institution. Besides their regular great collection of cakes – some true classics – they also offer custom-made themed cakes. You can order in their shops or online. My personal favourites are the Christoffel, a traditional Dutch birthday cake from the South of Holland, and the strawberry slof. They also deliver for a small fee.
Holtkamp (Centrum)
Located in the Vijzelstraat since 1969, Holtkamp is another Amsterdam classic. Besides patisserie, they are also known for their famous Dutch croquettes and bitterballen. You can visit their store or go online.
Le Fournil de Sébastien (Zuid)
A true classic French bakery. What’s not to love? No fancy big cakes but classic French tartes. And while you are there, don’t forget to try their bread and madeleines. Go early to avoid queuing.
Majesteit Taart (Oost)
Majesteit Taart offers a great assortment of cakes that you can enjoy ‘responsibly’. This includes biological, gluten-free, (refined) sugar-free, dairy-free cakes. So for some guilt-free pleasures, it is a great stop. They also offer wedding cakes, themed cakes, children’s cakes, and regular cakes. Their photo gallery is absolutely stunning. We never knew guilt-free could look so good.
