We’re back with a longer newsletter today as we’ll be taking a summer break for the next two weeks. With many museums putting on special programmes for children and lots of opportunities to enjoy the sunny weather at nature playgrounds in and around the city, there’s no shortage of fun family outings to enjoy during the rest of the holidays!

Events happening this weekend

Fluistervink boat tour of the Amsterdamse Bos – Saturday 1 August

You’ll be surrounded by the beautiful symphony of birdsong and frolicking waterfowl, and you might even catch a glimpse of other woodland animals seeking refuge along the banks. The experienced skipper will make sure you don’t miss a thing and will tell you all about the forest and its history.

Whether you’re a nature lover keen to embark on a new adventure or simply looking for a relaxing day out, the Fluistervink has something for everyone. Discover the hidden treasures of the Amsterdamse Bos whilst sitting comfortably on this open-top tour boat.

Mini Wildlife Safari at De Ceuvel – Sunday 2 August

Mini Safari “Join the Wild Bee Expedition and discover the mystery of the wild bee”

Time: be there at 10:50 I start 11:00 I end between 12:00-12:30

Language: Dutch, but other languages are welcome!

The recommended age is between 5 and 14, but younger and older children are also welcome. Participation is free, but please sign up in advance on the website.

Sunday Market at Westergas – Sunday 2 August

Come along to shop for jewellery, crafts, vintage clothing and more, taste the many different types of food on offer, or simply take a stroll past the many stalls selling unique products! Snacks, drinks, and a great atmosphere – what more could you want?

You’ll find the Sunday market at Westergas in Westerpark every first Sunday of the month. Find out more on Sunday Market’s website.

Ruige Rakkers: Technika10 at Pllek- Sunday 2 August​
During this fun workshop for kids ages 4-12 with Technika10, you’ll become an inventor and get straight to work using real tools! You’ll be drilling, hammering, sawing, fitting, measuring and working with lots of different materials and techniques. Find out more on Pllek’s website.

Ongoing & Upcoming Events

Robin Hood at the Bostheater (age 4+, in Dutch) 6-15 August

This summer, Het Kleine Theater is performing Robin Hood amongst the trees of Amsterdam’s Bostheater.

The classic tale of this social hero, who risks his own life to fight greed and inequality, is sadly still very relevant today. Now, too, is the time for action to combat poverty and inequality – to stop the country’s ruthless ruler!

Robin and her friends take up this fight in Sherwood Forest. They are helped by brave Marian, the King’s daughter. What can they do? They want no violence, no war. So they devise a clever ruse… Get your tickets on the Bostheater’s website.

Summer programme at Jeugdland

During the summer holidays, there’s something fun to do every day at Jeugland and you don’t need to book ahead. Climb and explore, race down the big slide hill, fly across the zip line, swing, seesaw or grab a go-kart. At Jeugdland, children are free to discover, build, climb, get messy and create their own adventures.

From 11:00 onwards you can build in the hut village. From 14:00 there is a free drop-in programme. Most of the barefoot sensory trail can be explored on your own. On Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings, the full trail is open with supervision.

Don’t forget your swimwear! Play in the shallow natural paddling pool, splash around in the stream under the zip line or take a swim in the natural swimming pool. Game On – Discover the world of video games at NEMO Science Museum

Video games are now bigger than the film and music industries combined. But how are they affecting us? In this exhibition, you can explore how games are changing the way we play, socialise and express ourselves. It’s designed for both seasoned gamers and people who’ve never held a controller before. Woeste Westen natural playground

Woeste Westen is a wonderful natural playground on the edge of Westerpark, where kids up to the age of 13 can play for free. The area is always open and playground attendants are on hand every day. Kids can have fun playing with sand and water, ride on a raft, play in a flowing stream, wander through reeds and copses, or simply enjoy nature in peace. Coffee, tea, juices and snacks are on sale and there’s a small terrace for parents. Woeste Westen will be hosting two Midzomer Mokum workshops on 14 August (details still tbc). Het Twiske nature reserve

Twiske is a great place just north of Amsterdam for a fun family day out: take a picnic and swim in the lake (check the water quality first), go for a bike ride or check out the nature playground or fun forest climbing. There are also two restaurants within the reserve.

Move Lab (Fridays only during the summer holidays)

Move Lab is an interactive exhibition for children aged 6-12 about mobility. Immerse yourself in the world of design; test your precision with a steady hand and experience the adrenaline of your very first driving lesson. At Move Lab, you’re always on the move! Much to do with bamboo at the Wereldmuseum

Looking for a fun activity to do with the kids in Amsterdam this summer? Visit the workshop at the heart of the museum. Build, decorate, weave, wave, bend, chill out in the bamboo tower and expand your knowledge with facts and myths; suitable for everyone aged 6 and over. Included in your museum ticket. Techlab at the Marineterrein

Build a robot, program a minicomputer, set a racing boat in motion or discover what you can make with a 3D printer. At Techlab, it’s all about curiosity. This summer, children aged 6 to 12 will have the chance to explore, experiment and learn about technology through play! The Comedy Embassy, Pride Edition at Boom Chicago – 31 July & 2 August

Celebrate Pride with an international lineup of hilarious stand-up comedians!

Boom Chicago is holding a special Pride edition of The Comedy Embassy, featuring four top comedians, a buzzing bar, and an audience ready for a great night of laughs.

Come with friends, come on a date, or come solo. Either way, you’ll leave laughing! Get your tickets before they sell out!

Summer Evenings at de Hortus

Enjoy a lovely summer evening with live music in the city’s most beautiful gardens: on Sundays in July and August the Hortus botanical gardens will be open until 20:00.

Stroll through the beautifully blooming garden, explore the greenhouses or find a spot on our sunny terrace. With a drink in hand, you can listen to live music performed by various bands and ensembles: from classic jazz to passionate boleros. Live music starts at 17:30 in the Orangerie. Events Happening This Weekend

FestiValk 2026 in Diemerbos

Looking for a family-friendly festival with plenty to keep little ones entertained? On 6 and 7 June, House of Bird’s free Festivalk returns to the Diemerbos, transforming the forest into a lively outdoor playground for all ages. Alongside live music, theatre and food stalls, the programme includes face painting, arts and crafts, games, nature activities, birdwatching walks and the interactive Urban Scientist Festival, giving curious young minds plenty to explore. With lots of space to play and a relaxed outdoor atmosphere, it’s an easy-going weekend outing for families looking to make the most of the season. Vlooiencircus: Jeuk in de Jordaan

For something a little quirky this weekend, Vlooiencircus: Jeuk in de Jordaan takes over Villa Kakofonie in the heart of the Jordaan on Sunday 7 June. This imaginative children’s theatre performance brings Amsterdam’s neighbourhood history to life through a cast of playful flea circus performers, combining storytelling, mini circus acts and a touch of mischievous magic. Designed to spark curiosity and laughter, the show weaves together tales of old and new Amsterdam while encouraging children to embrace their imagination. Keti Koti at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam

As part of the lead-up to Keti Koti, Wereldmuseum Amsterdam is hosting a special family programme on Sunday 7 June, inviting children to discover the stories, traditions and meaning behind the celebration of freedom. Young visitors can get creative by making their own bracelets decorated with kauri shells — a symbol often seen during the colourful Bigi Spikri parade — while learning more about the history and cultural significance of Keti Koti through hands-on activities. SoWhat family concert at Het Zonnehuis

Music-loving families can head to Amsterdam Noord on Sunday 7 June for a cheerful SoWhat family concert at Het Zonnehuis. Blending classical music, jazz, storytelling and playful audience participation, the performance invites children to clap, dance, sing and join in alongside the musicians. Designed for everyone from toddlers to grandparents, the concert creates a relaxed and interactive atmosphere where curiosity and creativity take centre stage. Upcoming Events

12 jaar de Ceuvel | De Verjaardag!​
​​
De Ceuvel is turning 12! And you’re invited! The celebration will take place on 20 June at the creative waterfront hub in Amsterdam Noord. Kids can have fun getting their faces painted, listening to stories from Dahlia’s Magic Grandmother and jam along with Superjam. In addition to the organised programme, there is plenty of space for free play with oversized traditional games – think 2-metre Jenga – hula hoop, circus-style activities, and even canoe safaris for a small adventure on the water. There’s something for everyone: crafting seed bombs, a chess tournament, goldsmithing and an evening of music in the Secret Garden. But don’t take our word for it, check out more here.

De Parade – KinderParade

From 24 July to 9 August, the travelling theatre festival De Parade takes over Martin Luther King Park in Amsterdam, with its daily KinderParade programme running every afternoon. Children can wander through a playful outdoor festival filled with theatre performances, music acts, creative workshops, painting and building activities, and interactive installations designed especially for younger audiences. Classic festival elements like the swing ride, poffertjes stands and open play areas make it an easy, free-flowing afternoon where kids can explore, try things out and move between activities at their own pace. Tolhuistuin – Summer kids programme

Throughout July 2026, Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam Noord becomes a playful summer hub for families, with a rotating programme of free and low-cost kids’ activities in the garden. One of the highlights is the Fawaka Zomer Workshops (23–26 July), where children can get hands-on creative and educational making sessions — from cooking their own snacks and making natural beauty products to upcycling old materials into music and crafts. Younger visitors can also join interactive storytelling and discovery games in the garden, including the ongoing Stout Konijn adventure trail, which turns the outdoor space into a playful scavenger hunt full of imagination and nature exploration. Zomerlab Symbiose at De Muziekstraat

Children aged 7 to 12 can kick off the summer holidays at Zomerlab Symbiose, a three-day creative programme taking place from 6–8 July in Amsterdam Noord. Inspired by the connections between people, nature and the world around us, the event combines music, theatre and art workshops in a playful outdoor setting. Throughout the programme, children are encouraged to experiment, create and collaborate, exploring big ideas through hands-on activities and artistic discovery. Bacchus Wine Festival

If your ideal child-free outing (although kids are also more than welcomed) involves good food, good company and a special glass wine, the Bacchus Wine Festival is back in the Amsterdamse Bos on 5–7 June and 12–14 June. Set among the trees, the festival brings together hundreds of wines from around the world, alongside food stalls, live music and a relaxed summer vibe. Discover the hidden gem – Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder

Discover this well-preserved 17th-century canal house. The narrow hallways and staircases lead to historically furnished living rooms, kitchens, and box beds, and a church in the attic as the highlight!

A visit to this special museum becomes even more fun with the Ladybug scavenger hunt (ages 5-10) or a festive audio tour (ages 10-12)!

Fun Forest Amsterdam Bos – for all little and not-so-little climbers!

​

Welcome to Fun Forest Amsterdam – where you are free to climb as many trees as you want! You have two to three hours to explore all the courses and go climbing from tree to tree. The only thing you need to bring is a little courage.

In the climbing park, you move through the trees using ropes, ladders, bridges, and zip lines. The climbing forest has 10 different courses, ranging in height from 2.5 to 15 meters.

Tulips plucking at Pluktuin Amstelveen

​

Spring is becoming more colorful than ever… In December, 10,000 tulips were planted at Pluktuin Amstelveen to be picked!

These tulips are quite special because they are grown in open ground and bloom at their own pace, they are extra sturdy tulips, meaning we can enjoy them for an extra long time.

The tulip outing is also fun with the kids this May holiday. Take amazing colorful photos or match the most beautiful colors. Children can also paint a small vase, pull tulips, and arrange them in the vase.

Elephants, Planet Sok at Planetarium and so much more at ARTIS

​

On Christmas Eve, a baby elephant was born at ARTIS, and on February 4, another elephant calf was born. The elephant herd goes outside for a few hours every day. During the May holidays, you can join Expedition Elephant! Follow the trail and discover fascinating facts about elephants.

Throughout the park, you will encounter young animals, learn more about nature, and participate in fun, educational activities. Visit the newborn elephants, go on a journey of discovery through the park, and dive into fascinating stories.

This is also your last chance to see the exhibition Dichtbij Tanja at the Groote Museum and admire the renovated Kerbert Terrace, where ring-tailed lemurs and rufous ruffs have been given a beautiful new enclosure.

From the breeding season to the universe: every corner of the park is full of surprises.

Events Happening This Weekend

Diep at De Krakeling – Friday 13th March

Who owns the sea? Does a fish feel free? Do you exist if you haven’t been discovered? Descend to the depths of the ocean, far away from land and humans. Here in the darkness, the most wondrous animals and organisms pass by. Diep is a show with fantastic luminous creatures and live music.

Foyer activity: Before and after the show, descend into the deepest depths and create your own deep-sea creature. By thinking about the special powers needed to survive in the depths and using all kinds of challenging drawing materials, you can let your imagination run wild.

Motherhood Speel, Deel en Recycle festival at De Hallen – Saturday 14th March

On Saturday, you can spend the day swapping toys and children’s clothing at De Hallen in Amsterdam West. There will also be fun recycling workshops, and you can get your broken toys repaired by Repair Café Jeltje.

Discover treasures, save toys, and realise that we need far fewer new things than we think. Hoping to find cool building toys, rollerblades, costumes, books, cuddly toys and games? Then bring some super cool items for someone else! (Up to 5 toys and 5 items of children’s clothing. Maximum of 1 baby item per category).

Ruige Rakkers craft workshop for kids at Pllek – Sunday 15th March

Everyone between the ages of 4 and 12 is welcome to drop by and join in the fun every Sunday afternoon at Pllek. There is a different workshop each week, and this Sunday you can enjoy craft activities with the Feesttantes! Hang up decorations, make headdresses and hairbands, design bags and hula hoop to your heart’s content. Free entrance. Find out more ​here​.

Nature safari at De Ceuvel – Sunday 15th March

Join a mini nature safari for kids and their grown-ups every third Sunday of the month. This Sunday’s safari is about birds and nests.

Put on your binoculars and head out with bird expert Randy. He’ll show you which birds are hiding here, from great crested grebes to kingfishers. This time of the year there are fewer leaves on the trees, so you can spot nests more easily. How do birds build a nest without hands? Grow your bird knowledge while you spot awesome birds, and get hands on by building a nest-material holder for them. Do you have binoculars? Bring them along! No binoculars? No problem, there are a few pairs available to borrow.

The safari starts at 11:00 and will end between 12:00 and 12:30.

Japanese Festival at Bethelkerk in Amsterdam Noord – Saturday 28th March

Check out this festival to try out Japanese sports like jiu-jitsu, or follow an origami or animation workshop. There will also be onigiri and other Japanese snacks available.

GRIMM – a fairytale mix of hiphop and ballet – various theatres – May & June 2026

Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and her seven dwarves… they all make an appearance in GRIMM. This imaginative collage performance for all ages proves that hip-hop and ballet can be a golden duo. The Junior Company and ISH Dance Collective bring together well-known fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm in a high-energy dance production that blends multiple styles. Top Trees

Every year, the conversation around the most sustainable Christmas tree reignites. While artificial trees might seem environmentally friendly due to their reusability, the reality is more complex.

• A real tree, if disposed of responsibly (e.g., chipped for mulch or used as firewood), has a carbon footprint of about 3.5 kg of CO₂ over its lifecycle. If left to decompose in a landfill, this footprint jumps to 16 kg of CO₂ due to methane emissions.
• By contrast, an artificial tree’s production and disposal create a much higher footprint—around 40 kg of CO₂—requiring many years of use to rival the environmental impact of a real tree. Nearly 90% of them are shipped across the world from China and are made with plastic which is toxic and often ends up in landfills.

When sustainably grown (without pesticides) and recycled properly, real trees are the eco-friendlier option. Beyond their low environmental impact, tree plantations also provide habitats for various species.

In Amsterdam, the municipality makes it easy to dispose of Christmas trees sustainably. With 2,000 collection points across the city, residents can drop off their trees between December 27 and January 19. These are then turned into compost, closing the loop on tree waste. Find your nearest collection point on the municipality’s official website.

There are also even more sustainable ways to enjoy a Christmas tree:

1. Potted Trees: Purchase a living tree in a pot and reuse it every year. Not only does this reduce your carbon footprint, but the tree continues to absorb CO₂ throughout its life.
2. Rent a Tree: Services like Kerstboom.nu allow you to rent a tree that is replanted after the holidays.
3. Adopt a Tree: Programs like Adopteer Een Kerstboom provide an option to “adopt” a tree for reuse, combining the joy of a real tree with sustainable practices.
4. Skip the Tree: Create a festive atmosphere using natural, reusable materials—garlands of greenery, handmade wreaths, or even a creative wall display.
5. Use a home plant you already have and decorate it!
6. Forage for an already fallen branch, bring it home and use it as tree. Post Christmas you can return it to the woods and use it again for Easter as an Easter tak.

(Don’t) Shop till you drop

The Holiday season (most often) comes with a frenzy of shopping, but a circular approach can bring meaning and sustainability to your celebrations. If you’re new to these ideas, check out our recent article on The Circular Path to Sustainability, which offers practical tips on adopting circular principles in everyday life. Applying these ideas during Christmas can make your celebrations more meaningful and eco-conscious:

• Second-Hand Items: Surveys show that nearly half of the respondents believe the stigma around second-hand gifting is fading, and that platforms like Marktplaats and thrift stores (kringloop winkels) in Amsterdam offer pre-loved treasures. This approach is also certainly budget friendlier..
• Experience Gifts: If second-hand gifting isn’t your style, consider tickets to a museum like the NEMO Science Museum or an ice-skating pass for the festive rink in Museumplein. An ‘experience gift’, can be shared together and create lasting memories without producing waste.
• Mindful Consumption: Avoid the “buy-now” trap. (Try the documentary The True Cost, to see how overconsumption has hidden environmental and social costs.)
• DIY Décor: Get creative with the kids! Use natural elements like pinecones, dried oranges, and paper chains to craft unique decorations.
• Recycled Lights: Use LED lights, which are energy-efficient and long-lasting, reducing the need for replacements next year.
• Second-Hand Ornaments: Hunt for unique, vintage ornaments in Amsterdam’s thrift stores or markets for make a one-of-a-kind Christmas tree this year!

By rethinking your Christmas trees, Christmas gifts, and Christmas decorations, you can celebrate a Christmas that’s truly giving ‘joy to the world’.

DIY Upcycling: Make Your Own Bird Feeder

One of the best ways to celebrate Earth Day is by repurposing everyday items to create something new and useful. A simple and enjoyable DIY activity for kids is making their own bird feeders using recycled materials. Not only does this activity teach kids about going green, but it also encourages creative thinking and gives an opportunity for children to connect with nature. Hearing the birds chirping outside is a great way to increase biophilic responses, as nature sounds are found to have positive impacts on our health and wellbeing.

Supplies needed:

• One tin can, clean and label removed.
• Paint of assorted colours (acrylic/water resistant) or decorative paper
• Paint brushes (if using paint)
• Ribbons/ strings
• Bird Seed
• Sturdy stick to act as a perch for the birds.

Instructions to put it together:

• Take the paper off of your tin can and paint the can in the desired colour. Leave it to dry and add another coat of paint if needed. You can also use decorative paper to wrap up the tin can instead of painting.
• If using paint, let the paint dry and add whatever other decorative elements you want using other colours.
• When the paint is dry, cut a long piece of ribbon about 18 to 24 inches long and tie it around one end of the tin can, leaving the two long edges at the top. Tie the two ends together to loop over a branch for hanging.
• Repeat this on the other end of the tin.
• Glue the stick into the can to function as a perch.
• When the glue is set, fill the can about halfway with seed and hang it sideways from a branch.

Your Earth Day craft is finished! Now hang it in the balcony or garden and sit back and watch the birds come in for a snack with your kids! Sometimes it can take a week for the birds to discover and start feeding from this new feeder so be patient.

Books to Inspire Young Environmentalists

Reading together is another wonderful way to introduce children to important environmental concepts and here are four recommended books to read to/with their kids this month:

1. “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss: This classic tale tells the story of the Lorax, who speaks for the trees, and teaches children about the importance of conservation and protecting our natural resources.
2. “Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa” by Jeanette Winter – Based on the true story of Wangari Maathai, this book tells the inspiring tale of how she empowered her community in Kenya to plant trees and restore the environment, ultimately leading to her winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
3. “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein: It is a cautionary tale about human exploitation of nature and the consequences of taking more than we give back.
4. “The Earth Book” by Todd Parr: In this colorful book, Todd Parr highlights different ways children can help take care of the Earth, such as conserving water, planting trees, and recycling.

Hope these activities are able to instill appreciation for the earth at a young age and empower our children to become stewards of the earth.

Oud Zuid

Oud Zuid is not as old as the canal belt and some areas of Oud Zuid can be downright new, but generally Oud Zuid is a large neighbourhood located between Museumplein on the north, Vondelpark on the west, the Zuider Amstelkanaal on the south and the Boerenweteringkanaal on the east. This location gives residents easy access to some of Amsterdam’s greatest resources: the vibrant beauty of the historic Canal Belt, the peace and quiet of the vast Amsterdamse Bos, and of course, Schiphol Airport!

Oud Zuid itself has lots of green space, open spaces, and quiet residential streets. There are plenty of playgrounds and athletic fields, excellent schools – both international and Dutch – and attractive shopping areas. It has tram service and subway service to downtown and Centraal Station and from Station Zuid one can get to virtually anywhere in the Netherlands.

Is it the proximity to Schiphol, downtown, or Zuidas that has made Oud Zuid popular with the international community? Or is it the international schools in the area? It is not clear what came first but for whatever reason, there is a large international community in Oud Zuid and it is not uncommon to hear English, French, Spanish, Mandarin, German, etc. mixed in with Dutch at the local playgrounds.

Housing

While they all have Oud Zuid on the street signs, there are basically three distinct neighbourhoods in Oud Zuid, each with its own feel – MuseumKwartier and Willemspark, Apollobuurt and Stadionbuurt. The most noticeable difference among the neighbourhoods comprising Oud Zuid is their architecture. There have been three major building waves in Oud Zuid, all with different styles but with the same intention: providing attractive and comfortable places for people to live.

• MuseumKwartier and Willemspark

  The first of the Old Zuid building waves began in the last quarter of the 19th century. Agricultural land was developed into the area now containing Museumplein and Vondelpark and its residential neighbourhoods. Muddy pastures transformed into tree lined streets full of elegant row houses loaded with decorative brickwork, charming balconies and idiosyncratic detailing, and with easy access to the newly built Rijksmuseum, Concertgebouw, and the city’s new park.

  While the horse-drawn carriages of yesteryear have been replaced by bakfiets (and Brios (!)), this neighbourhood still retains its air of elegance and exclusivity. Alongside the tourists and museums and stately consulates in Museumkwartier, there are plenty of families who call this area home and avail themselves of the family friendly resources in the neighbourhood.

• Apollobuurt

  The next large-scale development of Oud Zuid happened in the early decades of the 20th century. Amsterdam desperately needed housing for families and much care was given to designing neighbourhoods that would incorporate schools, shops, playgrounds, places of worship, and open spaces. A hundred years later, these neighbourhood designs still hold up. Housing is a mix of large, well-appointed apartments and attached houses; buildings usually max out at five stories. The architectural style of these neighbourhoods is pure Amsterdamse School – think brick, rounded organic shapes, decorative glass, and wrought ironwork. Sidewalks are generally wide and easily accommodate little ones on scooters or balance bikes.

  Amsterdam hosted the 1928 Olympic Games and many of the streets in the neighbourhood are named after figures in Greek  mythology and culture: Apollolaan, Minervalaan, Agamemmnonstraat, etc. Others are named after classical painters and musicians: Beethovenstraat, Bachstraat, Michelangelostraat, etc. Apollolaan, which forms the northern border of the neighbourhood, is a beautiful parkway lined with gorgeous  homes and even more gorgeous trees.

• Stadionbuurt

  The neighbourhood around the Olympic Stadium is called Stadionbuurt. Much of it, like Apollobuurt, was built in the 1920s but there has been a lot of new development lately. Luxury modern apartment buildings with underground parking and bordering the Schinkel waterway and its modern parks have gone up next to the Stadium and more are planned for a former industrial area across the Stadiongracht. Stadionplein – a large open area with bars and restaurants that also hosts farmers markets on the weekends is located across the street from Olympic Stadium and is bustling with shoppers and young people.One of the most attractive aspects of life in this newly developing neighbourhood is the truly special bike path that runs behind Olympic Stadium to the Amsterdam Bos, which is shared between Zuid and Amstelveen.

Living in Oud zuid is wonderful as you are surrounded by both history and culture and yet you also have a feeling that you live in a village! I often bump into people I know, which is a wonderful feeling when you’re away from home. Oud Zuid also has amazing coffee and food places around every corner!

Family Fun – Places of Interest / Parks / Sports

Zuiderbad, an elegant indoor swimming pool next to the Rijksmuseum, has plenty of family swim times and swim lessons for the  kids, not to mention floats and toys for making pool time loads of fun.

The basketball courts and playground on Museumplein are frequented by local kids, as are the gardens and fountains of the Rijksmuseum. During the winter there is an outdoor seasonal ice skating rink on Museumplein that offers lessons to children.

Concertgebouw has children’s concerts, the Rijksmuseum has children’s programmes and the Van Gogh Museum can play host to your child’s birthday parties.

South of Museumplein, the buzz and busyness disappears. The entire neighbourhood is closely connected toVondelpark and there are entrances to the park on virtually every block. It is hard to overstate the importance of Vondelpark’s resources to the people (and dogs) of the area. There are playgrounds, a splashing pool, grassy areas for picnics and games, cafes, waterways, rose gardens, running and cycling paths. There is even a place for little ones to learn to bake their treats!

On the Apollolaan, the trees are joined every few summers by the temporary modern art installation ArtZuid, which is a wonderful way to introduce visual arts to kids. They even have a summer camp!

Another one of the main thoroughfares in Oud Zuid is Stadionweg which passes through Minervaplein and its organic Friday market, Olympiaplein and its football fields, and finally to the 1928 Olympic Stadium itself, which still hosts athletic events, including the Amsterdam Marathon.

In 10 minutes or less it is possible to cycle from the relative density of the city to a huge forest, Amsterdamse Bos, where one can kayak, ride horses, walk for hours, visit two farms, swim, and navigate a tree top obstacle course.

Schooling

Zuid has several good local, bilingual and international schools. The most popular ones are:

• International School of Amsterdam
• The British School of Amsterdam
• Amsterdam International Community School

Shopping

The quiet residential streets of Oud Zuid empty into squares topped by chestnut trees where organic food markets set up on the weekends. The commercial streets – Koninginneweg, Cornelis Schuytstraat, Emmastraat – are lined with small cafes, chic boutiques, and gourmet grocery stores as well as the discreet Albert Heijn or Jumbo. The main commercial street of Apollobuurt is Beethovenstraat which is a mix of typical stores (Albert Heijn, Etos) and upscale boutiques and cafes. Two standouts for children are Boekhandel Van Rossum and MiniMarkt; Van Rossum’s has an extensive assortment of children’s books in both Dutch and English, and MiniMarkt has an eclectic and tasteful selection of children’s toys, clothes and home decor.

Calm and green streets very close to the city centre with lots of families and playgrounds. This is why I really enjoy living in Oud Zuid.

While many people are putting finishing touches to their Christmas trees, hanging up lights, and buying presents, Jewish people are celebrating Chanukah (or Hanukkah), The Festival of Lights. It’s an eight-day holiday held on the Hebrew date of 25 Kislev, and because the Hebrew calendar is based on the lunar cycle, the dates of Jewish holidays according to the Gregorian calendar change each year. This means that Chanukah can start at the end of November, or late December. Chanukah has been a Jewish holiday for thousands of years but has also been added to the list of ‘intangible Dutch Heritage’ holidays compiled by the Netherlands Center for Popular Culture and Intangible Heritage. In English there are two common ways of translating the word from the original Hebrew: Chanukah (the Ch sounds a bit like the Dutch g) or Hanukkah; either spelling is perfectly fine.

This year, 2020, Chanukah starts at sundown on Thursday December 10 and lasts until sundown on Friday December 18.

What Is Chahukah?

In the year 168 BCE, Jerusalem and the Jewish temple had been occupied by the Syrian Greeks, who had outlawed the practice of Judaism. The Maccabees were a small band of Jewish fighters who managed to defeat the Syrian Greeks and reclaim the Jewish temple they had occupied.

Once the temple had been reclaimed, the Maccabees relit the “eternal flame”. Although the one jar of oil that was found in the temple would normally only last for one day, in this case the flame continued to burn for eight days, which was the time it took to secure more oil to keep the flame burning. Hence the famous eight candles.

This is the miracle that is celebrated each year, along with the successful rededication of the temple. The word Chanukah means dedication, referring to the purification and rededication of the temple after the Greek occupation.

How We Celebrate

At the heart of the Chanukah celebration is the nightly lighting of the menorah or chanukiah, a candelabra that holds nine flames, and which is placed in a doorway or window so that people passing can see the lights and remember the story of Chanukah.

On each night of Chanukah, a candle is lit by the shammash (the helper candle), which is used to light the other candles from left to right. On the first night one candle is lit, on the second night, two are lit, and by the eighth night, all eight lights are kindled. Special blessings to thank G-d are said before the lighting, and traditional songs are sung afterwards.

Food and Fun!

Food plays a significant role in Jewish celebrations, and on Chanukah, favourite foods include those fried in oil to remember the miracle of the oil lasting eight days in the temple. These include latkes – pancakes made with potatoes – usually served with apple sauce and sour cream, and sufganiyot – round jam-filled doughnuts that have been deep fried in oil. The latter are extremely similar to oliebollen and show up at the same time of year.

Adults and children also play dreidel, a game with a 4-sided spinning top. Everyone contributes something (chocolate coins, matchsticks etc) to a pot as game tokens, and depending on what letter the dreidel lands, one either takes from the pot or adds to it. When a single player has all the tokens, they are the winner for that round.

Chanukah is also a time for many for giving and receiving, and presents or gelt (money) are typically given.

WHO/WHAT IS SINTERKLAAS?

After King’s Day, Sinterklaas is the Netherlands’ most important celebration. Sint and his helper, called Piet (Pete), bring presents to all children on December 5 to celebrate his birthday. Read all about him here.

SINTERKLAAS INTOCHT (ARRIVAL) 2020!

Due to the coronavirus, the official National Sinterklaas intocht 2020 (arrival) will be held in a secret place to prevent a large mass of interested people getting drawn to the arrival. The big yearly celebration will be broadcast on television on Saturday, November 14th, 12PM on NPO Zapp/NPO 3.

The arrival of Sinterklaas in Amsterdam will also be broadcast on television but just like the official National arrival, nobody will be allowed to be present at the arrival. The broadcast will be on Sunday, November 15th on AT5.

Starting November 9th more details will become available about the arrival of Sinterklaas from the official organisation, Sint in Amsterdam.

Please, DO NOT try to find out the secret locations for the Sinterklaas arrivals and attend them nor petition to make the arrivals open to the public. We are in a global pandemic and the coronavirus guidelines are clear, which makes it obvious that right now is not the time for large public events like the arrival of Sinterklaas.

KEEPING UP WITH SINTERKLAAS

Every year, kids can follow Sinterklaas’ progress on his annual travels to the Netherlands and the challenges upon arrival by watching the daily Sinterklaas Journaal on NTR/NPO Zapp.

WHAT’S UP WITH PIET?

Piet (Pete) is Sinterklaas’ companion and helper in Dutch and Belgian folklore.

Originally Piet (Pete) was called Zwarte Piet (Black Pete). However, in 2019 the official National Sinterklaas organisation decided to drop the blackface and have Sinterklaas only be accompanied by so-called Chimney Pieten. A move that was also followed by Het Sinterklaas Journaal and many celebrations in different municipalities in the Netherlands.

THE HORSE OF SINTERKLAAS

When Sinterklaas arrives in the Netherlands, he usually travels on his white horse. Over the years, this famous horse has changed and has had several names but since 1990, Sinterklaas’ horse was Amerigo. However, last year (2019), Amerigo retired after serving for over 30 years and Ozosnel made its debut during the official National Sinterklaas arrival of 2019. The name of Ozosnel was derived from the Sinterklaas song “Hoor de wind waait door de bomen” (“Hear the wind blowing through the trees”), in which the passage “Ja hij rijdt in donkere nachten op zijn paardje, oh zo snel” (“Yes,on dark nights, he rides on his horse, oh so fast”) is sung.

LETTER FROM SINTERKLAAS

As always, kids can send a letter to Sinterklaas and receive a reply from Sinterklaas. Weverkeshof is continuing the tradition this year, although Sinterklaashof itself will stay closed for the public.

To send a letter to Sinterklaas, please send letter by December 5th with a stamp to get a letter back. Please note if you want to receive a reply before Pakjesavond, your letter has to be received by December 1st. Here is the address:
