We got a taste of sunny weather this week, and lots of families have spent their time outside, enjoying the sun ahead of summer. If you want to keep the outdoor momentum going or try something a bit different with the kids over the next few days, here is our pick of interesting and interactive community events happening around town.

Events Happening This Weekend

Scoops by MOVE Lab

A high-energy, interactive pop-up event specifically designed for kids. MOVE Lab is challenging children to complete a series of engaging engineering and motion challenges. The best part? Once they complete the “Build and Race” challenge, they get to “Taste” their reward: a free scoop of ice cream. An event that perfectly balances a hands-on, active brain challenge with a sweet reward? Looks like a recipe for a fun afternoon! This is happening at Move Amsterdam on 30 & 31 May. Access to the pop-up space itself is free, though it doesn’t include the standard admission fee for the main MOVE Lab exhibition. You can find more information and planning details here.

Summer Ice Rink

Yup, you read that right. An ice rink in summer. Apparently, it’s possible with solar energy! From 29 May to 2 June, the grounds right next to the Olympic Stadium will open for ice skating from 12:00 to 18:00 daily. But not only that, they are also setting up a neighbourhood space with a film, snacks, and drinks on site. More information on how it works and what to expect can be found here.

Children’s Book Festival

Just off the ferry from Centraal Station, Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam Noord is hosting a Children’s Book Festival again for the 8th year. This is a vibrant family arts festival that brings the best children’s books of the past year to life. Instead of just static book readings, it features a highly interactive, curated mix of performances, music, theater, visual arts, fashion, and hands-on workshops tailored for kids aged 4 and up. This happens on Sunday 31 May 2026, with doors opening at 11:00. Tickets and the full schedule of activities can be found here.

Farmer’s Day at Elsenhove

From 13:00 – 16:30 on Sunday 31 May, children can visit Elsenhove for their Farmer’s Day. Kids can witness up close a sheep shearing demonstration, an insect tasting, stalls and fun games. Such a wonderful experience that the whole family can enjoy, all for free! Speelboerderij Elsenhove is in Amstelveen, not far from Amsterdam but cycling or coming by car is recommended. Upcoming Events

Heads up for June: A free family festival on the Bosbaan (19–21 June)

If you are planning out your June weekends, the Koninklijke Holland Beker rowing regatta is returning to the Amsterdamse Bos with a great, free family festival along the water. The shoreline is being taken over by the team behind the Rollende Keukens food festival, meaning it will have a really relaxed, bohemian vibe with live music, food stalls, a retro mini-Ferris wheel, and plenty of space for kids to play. It’s a nice, non-commercial option for a weekend hangout—and for anyone tracking the World Cup, they are also screening the Netherlands vs. Sweden match on Saturday evening. The Little Big Things Musical

The Royal Theatre Carré is exclusively hosting the acclaimed West End musical The Little Big Things this summer from 20 June to 16 August. Performed entirely in English with a spectacular live band, the show tells the deeply moving, true story of an ordinary teenager and his family learning to completely redefine their lives and find resilience after a sudden accident. It is a high-caliber production brought directly to Amsterdam, and because it’s a limited, exclusive run in the city, prime weekend family seating will sell out well in advance. Holland Festival

The annual Holland Festival returns from 3-28 June 2026, bringing its usual massive lineup of international performing arts to Amsterdam. While much of the programme leans toward avant-garde theatre and adult contemporary dance, the opening event on Wednesday 3 June is exceptionally family-friendly. Titled City of Floating Sounds, it kicks off as a giant, collective musical walk through the city toward the Royal Theatre Carré. Families use a free smartphone app that plays different fragments of a classical symphony as you walk, blending everyone’s phones together to create a giant, moving soundscape in the streets before a live orchestra takes over inside the theatre. It is a highly sensory, interactive way to introduce kids to orchestral music while moving around outdoors. You can check out the route details and the rest of the programme here.

Heroes Dutch Comic Con: Summer Edition

If you have kids (even pre-teens or teenagers) who are into gaming, anime, or movies, the summer edition of Dutch Comic Con is coming up at the Jaarbeurs Utrecht on 20 & 21 June. It gets busy, but the energy is great, and it’s a huge hit for families with older kids who want to check out the gaming tournaments, see the incredible costumes, or browse the dealer hall. Tickets for this always disappear weeks in advance, especially the family passes (which cover two adults and two youth tickets) or the individual youth tickets for kids aged 6 to 12. Little ones aged 5 and under get in free, but you still have to grab a free ticket for them online beforehand to secure a spot. You can check out the lineup and book tickets here.

Parents’ Corner

Coffee and Beats

Parents need to take a beat, and by that we mean enjoy curated beats over your choice of specialty coffee. Since having kids, some parts of our lives have definitely changed. But with everything going on between work, home, and the endless loop of school drop-offs and pick-ups, a relaxed afternoon out to mingle and enjoy music while sipping coffee sounds tempting. Write & Collage​
If you are looking for a creative outlet to clear your head, this intuitive workshop pairs short-form writing with collage art in a relaxed, open-ended session. The process kicks off with a quick, ten-minute writing exercise sparked by a single prompt. Whatever ends up on your page—whether it’s a vivid memory, a strange image, or an unexpected stream of consciousness—becomes the raw material and starting point for your artwork. From there, it’s all about cutting, tearing, and layering materials based on instinct rather than rigid rules. Castle Day 2026 – Pentecost Weekend Edition

​

During Castle Day, castles and country estates throughout the Netherlands open their gates. Visit, not only for a look inside, but especially to stroll outside through orchards, along winding paths, and past centuries-old moats… plus scavenger hunts in the park and storytelling in castle gardens!

The theme this year is ‘ LOVE ‘ – so expect plenty of loving activities in the open air. Castles, estates, and country houses were and are places full of passion and emotion… Who loved whom? Which bonds proved stronger than time? And how has love – in all its forms – shaped the history of these special places?

The Amsterdamse Bostheater is a truly magical place to experience live music. You stand in the open air, surrounded by greenery, with a stage that feels like one from a mini festival. Lepeltje Lepeltje Festival – NDSM Wharf

​

From Friday 22 May to Monday 25 May, you can enjoy a delicious meal with the whole family during the long Whitsun weekend at the Lepeltje Lepeltje Festival at NDSM Wharf in Noord. Enjoy culinary delights, refreshing brews, and atmospheric music during the extra-long weekend.

At Lepeltje Lepeltje, there is also plenty for the kids to do. Hop on the Carousel, take a look at the mysterious Flea Circus together, swap toys and clothes at the Swap Market, or join the recycle workshops.

An energetic theatre performance on Monday 25 May, with music, puppetry, and body paint, about how to find and keep friendship – Harimau is now presented at Plein Theater. It is an enchanting tale right from the jungles of Indonesia presented to the audience in an interactive, fun way.

Children’s Funfair at OCCI Kinderpret

​

Children’s Funfair is a cheerful themed party for children aged 3 to 10, taking place on Wednesday 27 May. Together with an adult supervisor, children can enjoy all kinds of funfair attractions and activities.

Hop on the Feet Off the Floor Carousel, get your face painted, discover the Magnet Fishermen’s Cabinet of Curiosities, try the shooting gallery or one of the other games, and make your own cotton candy. This is the last Kinderpret before the long holidays and a fun way to kick off the Summer.

Farmers’ Day at Boerderij Elsenhove

​

At Speelboerderij Elsenhove, you will find all kinds of farm animals, a large adventurous and natural playground, and the opportunity to learn a lot about nature, the environment, and sustainability. Activities are organized (usually on Sundays) during the period from March to November.

31 May is Farmers’ Day. Several stalls with fun games are set up all over the farmyard. There is usually a scavenger hunt for children as well.

Keti Koti Festival at the Wereldmuseum

​

On 1 July, Keti Koti/Dia di Abolishon is celebrated, and we commemorate the abolition of slavery and celebrate freedom. Keti Koti begins every year with the Bigi Spikri parade. It is a colourful procession in which people often wear traditional clothing and accessories, such as bracelets with cowrie shells and angisa headscarves.

Join the celebration by making your own bracelet with cowrie shells, every weekend during the month of June, at the Wereldmuseum and learn more about Keti Koti/Dia di Abolishon.

Buitenspeeldag (Outdoor Play Day) – 10 June

Outdoor Play Day is the day when the whole of the Netherlands goes outside to play. Running, discovering, and having fun together. Every neighbourhood can participate by organising something: from a simple sidewalk chalk activity to a big afternoon of play in the street, playground, park, or schoolyard.

Aardbewoners festival at Artis – 14-17 May

The Aardbewoners (Earthlings) Festival is all about Planetary Health: the idea that everything on Earth is interconnected. Plants, animals, microbes… and us. If nature loses its balance, we all feel the effects. It’s like a game of Jenga. The more blocks you remove, the more unstable the tower becomes, until it finally collapses. We are one of those blocks. Without a healthy planet, there can be no healthy people. At the festival, you’ll discover how these connections work and what you can do to keep the tower standing strong. And there are some surprisingly fun ways to do it! Proef Pampus Festival at Forteiland Pampus 14-17 May

Klop Klop Boem Boem dance show at De Krakeling – Sunday 17 May

Knock knock, who’s there? Boom boom, what’s that I hear? Klop Klop Boem Boem is a rhythmic dance concert for the whole family, an ode to the heartbeat. Three performers dance, drum and sing whatever their hearts tell them to. You don’t just hear it; you see the rhythm moving through their whole bodies. Rabo Dikke Banden Races in Noorderpark
​Join the Dikke Banden Races on Saturday 9 May! These accessible cycling competitions are open to children aged 2 to 12. Children can take part on their own balance bike or pedal bike, and participation is free. A 250–500 metre trail is set out so children can cycle safely. ​On Saturday 9 May, visit NIO House Amsterdam for story time and crafting. Events happening this weekend

IJ-Hallen & Sunday Market

Two of Amsterdam’s best markets are happening this weekend. IJ-Hallen at NDSM (09:00–16:30) is where you’ll find hundreds of stalls on 2–3 May, perfect for treasure-hunting with the kids. Then on Sunday, Westergas (12:00–18:00) will be lined with stalls showcasing crafts, art, handmade goods, jewellery, clothes, toys, and — of course — food trucks.

Remembrance Day & Liberation Day (4–5 May)

On Remembrance Day (4 May), a nationwide 2-minute silence is observed at 20:00, when public transport and traffic come to a stop. It can be a meaningful moment to share with older kids.

Het Vrije Westen Festival at Westerpark

On 5 May 2026, Westerpark will be filled with 10 stages celebrating freedom for the Liberation Festival. From 14:00–23:00, come and enjoy a wide range of events including dance, live music, DJs, puppet theatre, and inspiring performances. At this annual event with plenty of activities and food trucks, young and old are welcome to celebrate freedom, no matter their background. Free to enter.

Freedom Meal at Pllek

For a limited 200 spots, a 3-course meal is available for just €9.50, served from 11:30–13:00. Afterwards, the celebrations and performances continue, with a full day’s programme (15:00–21:30) that’s free for young and old.

Kiddie pools around the city are opening

​As of this weekend, the wading pools will be open! From May to September, peuterbadjes across the city will be filled with water whenever the temperature climbs above 20 degrees.

Mother’s Day Concert at Concertgebouw

A concert the whole family can enjoy (recommended from age 6) will be held on 10 May at the Concertgebouw. The North Netherlands Symphony Orchestra will perform this beautiful storytelling concert.

Fun Forest Amsterdam Bos – for all little and not-so-little climbers!

​

Welcome to Fun Forest Amsterdam – where you are free to climb as many trees as you want! You have two to three hours to explore all the courses and go climbing from tree to tree. The only thing you need to bring is a little courage.

In the climbing park, you move through the trees using ropes, ladders, bridges, and zip lines. The climbing forest has 10 different courses, ranging in height from 2.5 to 15 meters.

Tulips plucking at Pluktuin Amstelveen

​

Spring is becoming more colorful than ever… In December, 10,000 tulips were planted at Pluktuin Amstelveen to be picked!

These tulips are quite special because they are grown in open ground and bloom at their own pace, they are extra sturdy tulips, meaning we can enjoy them for an extra long time.

The tulip outing is also fun with the kids this May holiday. Take amazing colorful photos or match the most beautiful colors. Children can also paint a small vase, pull tulips, and arrange them in the vase.

Elephants, Planet Sok at Planetarium and so much more at ARTIS

​

On Christmas Eve, a baby elephant was born at ARTIS, and on February 4, another elephant calf was born. The elephant herd goes outside for a few hours every day. During the May holidays, you can join Expedition Elephant! Follow the trail and discover fascinating facts about elephants.

Throughout the park, you will encounter young animals, learn more about nature, and participate in fun, educational activities. Visit the newborn elephants, go on a journey of discovery through the park, and dive into fascinating stories.

This is also your last chance to see the exhibition Dichtbij Tanja at the Groote Museum and admire the renovated Kerbert Terrace, where ring-tailed lemurs and rufous ruffs have been given a beautiful new enclosure.

From the breeding season to the universe: every corner of the park is full of surprises.

​On Saturday 18 April, get creative in preparation for Kodomo no Hi, a Japanese tradition celebrated on 5 May and dedicated to children. You could also take a day trip outside Amsterdam to admire the flower sculptures in de Zilk and cycle past beautiful tulip fields. And of course there’s also plenty to do in the city this weekend, whether you want to enjoy a family concert together, visit a market or do some volunteering. Read on to discover our best tips!

Events Happening This Weekend

De Zilk Flower Mosaics – Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 April

This weekend you can cycle around de Zilk near Hillegom to admire the incredible flower sculptures and mosaics on display. The exact route​ will be published on Friday. As well as this display of sculptures, there will also be flower parades in nearby villages next weekend – check out the full list of events ​here​. There will probably be heavy traffic between Amsterdam and the tulip fields over the next few weekends, so why not opt to take your bikes on the train to Hillegom, for a less stressful and greener journey? Check the NS website​ for more details on bike transport on trains.

Clean up Vondelpark with Serve the City – Saturday 11 April

Vondelpark is a second home for many of us, with its fun playgrounds and cafés, paddling pool in summer and sometimes even snowball fights or ice-skating in winter. But sadly our beautiful park is often blighted by litter. Now you can give back and join a team of volunteers to help clean it up. Sign up on ​Serve the City’s website​.

Mundo Sonora at Podium Mozaïek – Sunday 12 April

Over 50 musicians perform a colourful repertoire from the Middle East, ranging from sweet love songs to infectious dance music.

This concert brings together two musical families: Orchestre Partout and Groot Excelsior. The latter have been making music in Amsterdam for generations, while the musicians of Orchestre Partout have recently moved to Amsterdam’s asylum seekers’ centre and they play together there every week.

Lolobaki in concert at Munganga – Sunday 12 April

Lolobaki tells the story of a stone that travels the world, encountering animals along the way who teach it lessons. This allows the stone to find itself through others.

Pure Markt at Amstelpark – Sunday 12 April

Amsterdam’s travelling Sunday market returns to Amstelpark this weekend with food and drink from around the world as well as vintage, designer and gift items. You can find out more on the Pure Markt website​.

Amstelpark also offers a mini-golf course, fairground rides and a train that travels a loop around the whole park, making it a fun day out for the whole family!

Please note that the main playground is currently closed for renovations, but the fairground rides are still accessible.

Pampus is a historic fortified island, living fort museum, and sustainable adventure in the middle of the IJmeer.

Tulip Festival all around Amsterdam – 1-30 April

At over 100 locations across the city, you can walk or cycle past colourful tulips in public spaces this April. Hundreds of thousands of tulips will brighten up streets, squares and bridges all over Amsterdam under the motto: “a tulip for every Amsterdammer”. Spring Celebration at De Ceuvel – 18 April

On Saturday 18 April Café De Ceuvel is hosting a spring celebration! This seasonal celebration centres around food. Because as soon as everything starts sprouting and teeming with life again, the story behind what we eat begins too: from soil and seed to bee, plant and human. During the Spring Celebration, you can dive into that living food system through fun workshops, mini safaris, circular bites, talks, documentaries, music and theatre. BIoBlitz Nature Festival – 25 April in Noorderpark

Attention young explorers and nature lovers! On Saturday 25 April, Eco Kids and Stichting Spin are organising Bioblitz for Kids, a free nature festival for all children aged 4 to 12. These festive workshops are divided into two sessions (10:00–11:30 and 12:00–13:30) and offer a wonderful “Play with Art” experience combined with Toddler Sense activities, including a short music and movement session in the gym. Easter at Willet-Holthuysen House

Throughout the holiday weekend from 4 to 6 April, the Willet-Holthuysen House invites families to discover a hidden gem in the heart of the canal district. Kids can participate in a traditional egg hunt in the grand 17th-century garden between 10:00 and 15:00, while the “Easter Studio” remains open until 17:00 for colouring and crafts. It is a wonderful way to combine a bit of local history with festive fun, and children can even win a small prize for finding the hidden eggs.

GRIMM: Hiphop meets Ballet

Looking slightly further ahead, the hit production GRIMM is returning to Amsterdam theatres this May and June, offering an imaginative mashup of the Brothers Grimm’s most famous fairy tales. This high-energy performance features a collaboration between the Junior Company of the Dutch National Opera & Ballet and the ISH Dance Collective, blending classical elegance with sharp popping and locking moves. Characters like Snow White, Cinderella, and the Seven Dwarves collide in a vibrant world of video projections and breathtaking choreography that appeals to all ages.

Nature Kids Camp at Terragon

Terragon Nature Lab is offering Spring Nature Camps for children aged 4–10 from 6 April to 1 May. Located at a private forest site in Oud-Osdorp, the programme features a mix of nature play, outdoor games, and seasonal crafts. The daily sessions run from 09:00 to 15:00 and are conducted in small groups with experienced supervision and a high counsellor-to-child ratio. Parents can also take advantage of the pick-up service from central locations or the on-site parking for drop-offs. Welcome back to this week’s Weekend Roundup of what’s happening and what to look forward to. In this issue we have curated events to include kids, teens and their amazing parents as well. With some sun and rain, spring has already arrived, promising longer days and more opportunities to enjoy the colourful outdoors. Find below some activities we think you might enjoy this weekend.

Easter with Amsterdam Mamas & WOW

​

Amsterdam Mamas will once again host an Easter event with WOW! Check below for details and mark your calendars – 4th April 2026!

Location: Churchillaan 86 (WOW Rivierenbuurt)

Two workshop sessions:

• 10:00 – 11:30

• 12:00 – 13:30

The workshop will include an arts & crafts activity, followed by a short music and movement session in the gym. The remaining time will be for free play, and families can also enjoy coffee or tea.

The price is €15. ​

Butterfly Garden at Black Cat Theatre

​

Black Cat Theatre is the perfect place for children to witness the world of theatre and creativity. Butterfly Garden is a show where children can dive into the wonderful world of butterflies – a world that is colourful, mobile and mysterious.

Arts Festival for little & very little ones – 2turvenhoog

​

The high-quality performing arts provide beautiful – often first – theatre experiences for young children with their adult companions. These are wonderful moments between parents, grandparents, siblings, and/or other adult guardians.

Easter Parade at Gelderlandplein

​

A colourful spring parade with dancing flower girls, bees, bunnies, and other characters, including a life-sized Easter bunny. Super fun and cheerful! So get into the spring spirit and shop at Gelderlandplein on the 28th. The spring parade lasts 45 minutes and takes place four times between 12:00 and 16:30.

Wednesday boat tours with Fluistervink at Amsterdam Bos

​

Step aboard the Fluistervink and let yourself be carried along winding waterways while you admire the forest from a whole new perspective.

Along the way, you are surrounded by the beautiful symphony of birdsong and frolicking waterfowl, and you might catch a glimpse of other forest animals seeking refuge along the banks. The experienced skipper ensures you don’t miss a thing and tells you all about the forest and its history.
