Welcome back to this week’s Amsterdam Mamas Weekend Roundup! September may have us reaching for sunglasses, raincoats and jumpers all in the same afternoon, but luckily Amsterdam has plenty to keep the whole family entertained whatever the weather decides to do. From getting creative and discovering tiny water creatures to clapping, dancing and singing along, we’ve gathered some fun ways to make the most of the weekend with the kids. Let the weekend adventures begin!

Events happening this weekend

​

Open Huis X TF at Meervaart

On Saturday 12 September, Meervaart opens its doors for an afternoon full of creativity and family fun. From 12:00 to 17:00, children can try their hand at dancing, acting, music and more during free trial lessons and creative workshops.

There is plenty for different ages, including toddler activities for ages 2–3, dance and theatre sessions for older children, backstage tours and activities in the foyer. Families can also catch performances of Sam & Julia for ages 3–7 and Dag Poes for ages 4–8. Entry to the Open Huis activities and trial lessons is free, while tickets are required for the performances.

Waterdierenexcursie (Water creatures excursion) at Amsterdamse Bos

Grab a net and discover what is hiding in and around the water at the Amsterdamse Bos! On Sunday 13 September, children can join a forest ranger on a special excursion in search of some of the Bos’s smallest and most fascinating inhabitants.

Using small fishing nets, curious young nature lovers will explore the water and learn more about the creatures that call it home. The excursion runs from 14:00 to 15:30, starting at De Boswinkel.

Groove Beest Family Concert: The Soul of Gospel

Get ready to clap, stamp, sing and dance! On Sunday 13 September, ZO! Gospel Choir transforms BIMHUIS into one big musical playground with Groove Beest: The Soul of Gospel, an interactive family concert full of energy and rhythm.

During the gospel jam, everyone gets to join in. Families will learn new moves, make music with their hands and feet and discover why some music simply makes it impossible to sit still. The concert runs from 13:30 to 14:30 with reduced-price tickets also available.

And for families who want to keep the groove going, a SoundLAB Groove special takes place afterwards at Muziekgebouw from 15:00 to 16:30.

Walk-In Workshop at The Mouse Mansion

Calling all little Sam & Julia fans! The Mouse Mansion invites families to get creative in its workshop space, where children can decorate their very own miniature creation inspired by the wonderful world of the famous mice.

Choose from projects including a furniture set, Little Mouse Door or Bedroom To Go suitcase, then add your own colours, patterns and imaginative touches. Once the masterpiece is finished, children can take their creation home. The workshop is designed as a walk-in activity, so it is an easy addition to a family day in Amsterdam.

Speelatelier – SYNESTHEET Family Weekend

Little artists can explore the world through their senses at the Speelatelier (Play Workshop) on Saturday 19 September. Designed for children aged 2–5 and their parents or carers, this playful session is all about discovering art through touch, sound, movement and experimentation.

Together with artists, children can investigate different materials, sounds and spaces, letting their imagination and curiosity lead the way. The workshop takes place from 10:30 to 11:30 at Synestheet in Amsterdam-Zuidoost and is free to attend.

Kinderfestival Wajo! Wetenschap?!

Calling all curious young minds! On Sunday 4 October, the beautiful 17th-century Trippenhuis turns into a playground for science during the free Wajo! Wetenschap?! children’s science festival, especially for children aged 8–14.

Fold your own microscope and discover a hidden world, build an electric motor, test your knowledge of Dutch youth slang or go on a mysterious fungi hunt in the cellars. With experiments and interactive activities throughout the building, there is plenty to keep budding scientists busy. The festival runs from 12:00 to 17:00 and admission is free.

The Art Café Workshops – Amsterdam Museum

Time to roll up those sleeves and get creative! To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Amsterdam Museum is hosting a series of Art Café workshops at Amsterdam in Motion, with sessions taking place on several Saturdays throughout September and October.

Each workshop takes inspiration from the museum’s collection and stories before inviting visitors to have a go themselves. Make Amsterdam canal houses from clay or experiment with linocut printing while discovering new techniques along the way. No previous artistic talent is required – masterpieces and enthusiastic experiments are equally welcome!

Cinekid Festival 2026

Lights, camera, family day out! Cinekid Festival returns to Amsterdam from 10 to 16 October, bringing six days of film, media and plenty of opportunities to get creative at Pathé Amsterdam Noord.

Alongside the latest films and series from around the world, families can peek behind the scenes of filmmaking and explore the Cinekid MediaLab, packed with games, VR and AR experiences. There are also special events that turn a trip to the cinema into a whole adventure, so families can put together their own festival day depending on what catches their eye.

Opening Night in Oosterpark – Concertgebouw Orchestra

Classical music under the stars? Yes, please! On Friday 11 September, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra celebrates the start of its new season with a free open-air concert in Amsterdam’s Oosterpark.

Conducted by Han-Na Chang, the orchestra will perform classical favourites including music by Rossini, Bizet, Wagner and Glinka. Come early for the opening programme featuring young musicians from 18:45, grab something tasty from one of the food trucks and find a spot on the grass. The main concert starts at 20:15 and admission is completely free – no ticket required.

Amsterdamse Sport- en Beweegweek 2026

Fancy trying a new sport without committing to a membership first? From 18 to 27 September, the Amsterdamse Sport- en Beweegweek (Sport and Movement Week) gives Amsterdammers the chance to get moving and try a huge variety of sports and activities for free.

Sports clubs and organisations across the city open their doors, with activities ranging from gentle exercise to more energetic workouts. There are options for adults aged 18–55, older adults, children and teenagers, as well as adapted sports, so there really is something for everyone. With activities taking place across Amsterdam, it might just be the excuse you need to discover a new favourite way to move.

Wereldmuseum – Much to Do with Bamboo​
Looking for a fun activity with the kids in Amsterdam this Thursday? At Wereldmuseum Amsterdam, dive into a world of bamboo! Visit the creative making space at the heart of the museum. On Sunday 30 August, step back in time with one of Amsterdam’s most beloved traditions! Poppenkast op de Dam brings the classic Dutch puppet characters Jan Klaassen and Katrijn to life every Sunday afternoon in front of the Royal Palace on Dam Square. With lively storytelling, plenty of audience interaction and traditional Amsterdam humour, the performances are a charming way to experience a piece of the city’s cultural heritage. With a programme running from 12:00 – 21:00 this Saturday, it’s a great opportunity to discover the creativity, culture and community that make the Indische Buurt such a vibrant part of Amsterdam. st Art – Tile Painting
​Join st-Art this Saturday for a vibrant and hands-on painting session inspired by the beauty of traditional Sicilian tiles. Guided by artist Paulina Siniatkina. Paulina is an instructor in the studio’s daily lessons and different workshops. Let’s admit it: that was quite a summer to remember! From record-breaking heatwaves across the country and the rest of Europe to exciting World Cup fever and even a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse, we hope you and your family had the restful summer reset we all needed. Now, with school back in full swing, summer holidays are officially behind us, and the rain has made its grand return. But don’t let the cloudy skies dampen your spirits! We’ve rounded up a wonderful mix of activities, including plenty of rain-proof options, to kick off the new school year in style.

Events Happening This Weekend

Prinsengrachtconcert

An iconic annual highlight enjoyed by all ages, the Prinsengrachtconcert returns this Saturday 22 August (Junior Concert: 15:00; Main Concert: 21:20). As the country’s largest classical music event, world-class musicians perform live on a floating stage right on the canal, making it a truly memorable cultural experience to mark the end of summer. Entry is free; just be sure to arrive early to secure a good spot along the canal in front of the Pulitzer Amsterdam Hotel. Guidelines and more information can be found here.

Mundana Music and Movement for Little Ones

Taking place this Saturday 22 August, this cosy, interactive musical discovery session introduces babies and toddlers (ages 1–2) to gentle live instruments, soothing rhythms, and engaging songs. This indoor rain-proof event is a wonderful sensory bonding experience for parents and little ones to explore music together in a warm, relaxed setting. Fat Tyre Race

Bring your balance bike, scooter, city bike or mountain bike (no racing bikes!) to join the fat tyre race this Saturday 22 August at Buurtboerderij Centraal. Bosfest Closing Weekend (Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 August)

Within the forest, immerse yourselves in theatre shows that will pique your curiosity. The lineup boasts some thought-provoking productions that are not to be missed. Jazz Fest with Bonus Kids’ Programme

Head over to Noorderlicht on the NDSM-Werf this Saturday 22 August, for the third edition of A Funky Wicked Jazz Fest! From 13:00 to 23:00, this mini festival brings an infectious mix of funk, soul, live jazz, and dance workshops right to the waterfront. What makes this year extra special for families is the brand-new kids’ programme running until 17:30, featuring live djembé jams, entertainment from Sesamstraat legend Hakim, craft tables, and plenty of space to dance in the sun. It’s an easy-going, rain-or-shine favourite where parents can grab a drink, soak up the groove, and let the little ones burn off some serious weekend energy; tickets are available here.

Pluk de Nacht Open Air Festival

Running from late August at Het Stenen Hoofd (Westerdoksdijk 1), Pluk de Nacht is the Netherlands’ premier open-air film festival, bringing independent feature films, animations, and art installations under the stars right along the IJ waterfront. While adults can enjoy evening screenings, drinks, and silent disco parties, on Sunday 23 August, families can drop by for Pluk MINI, a special free family afternoon featuring kids’ film screenings, pop-up games, and art activities in a vibrant, relaxed seaside atmosphere. The festival site opens in the afternoon, entry to the grounds is free, and reserved deckchairs for screenings start at €11 per person, making it an ideal late-summer outdoor treat for parents and children alike! Hockey World Cup

The Netherlands is co-hosting the FIH Hockey World Cup this year at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, right on the edge of the Amsterdamse Bos. Beyond watching the exciting matches and cheering on your favourite teams, families can head to the vibrant fan village outside the stadium, featuring interactive skills challenges, mini matches, and food trucks—an ideal outing for active, sports-loving kids! Concertgebouw Open

A new season is about to begin, presenting a new lineup of performances at the Concertgebouw. But before that, on 5 September the famed concert hall will open its doors to the public for a whole day of mini concerts happening in multiple rooms in the building all at once. From classical music to jazz, contemporary, and even music for children, this day, which only happens once a year, will delight the whole family. The event is free of charge, but you’ll need to reserve your tickets here.

Openmonumentendag

The 40th edition of the VriendenLoterij Open Monument Day is happening on 12 and 13 September. During Open Monument Day, thousands of monuments in the Netherlands are open to the general public, and countless different activities are organised: exhibitions, guided tours, cycling routes, walks, and activities for little ones. This is the perfect opportunity to explore and get to know more of the Netherlands through its monuments all around the country. Some monuments or buildings will only be open during this weekend. Perimenopause & Women’s Health

Yes, it’s real. Women have to go through menopause at some point in their lives, but now we are learning that changes in our bodies can actually happen sooner, and that’s called perimenopause. There are a lot of questions that are difficult to answer from simple internet searches; luckily there’s an expert talk and panel with a GP happening on 3 September at Zoku Amsterdam. Pottery Night

If you’re looking to unwind after a hectic first week back in the school routine, grab a friend and head to Studio Keramiek for an evening of mindful, tactile creativity. Designed specifically as a relaxing adult getaway, this cosy indoor workshop lets you learn wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques with a glass of wine in hand and soft music playing in the background. It’s an ideal, rain-proof way to wash away weekday stress, chat with fellow local parents, and bring home a handmade ceramic keepsake. Sessions run on weekend evenings, and pre-booking via their website is required as spots fill up quickly.

Events happening this weekend

Fluistervink boat tour of the Amsterdamse Bos – Saturday 1 August

You’ll be surrounded by the beautiful symphony of birdsong and frolicking waterfowl, and you might even catch a glimpse of other woodland animals seeking refuge along the banks. The experienced skipper will make sure you don’t miss a thing and will tell you all about the forest and its history.

Whether you’re a nature lover keen to embark on a new adventure or simply looking for a relaxing day out, the Fluistervink has something for everyone. Discover the hidden treasures of the Amsterdamse Bos whilst sitting comfortably on this open-top tour boat.

Book your tickets on the website. During the summer holidays there are tours every Wednesday and Saturday, and tours every Saturday in September.

Mini Wildlife Safari at De Ceuvel – Sunday 2 August

Mini Safari “Join the Wild Bee Expedition and discover the mystery of the wild bee”

Time: be there at 10:50 I start 11:00 I end between 12:00-12:30

Language: Dutch, but other languages are welcome!

The recommended age is between 5 and 14, but younger and older children are also welcome. Participation is free, but please sign up in advance on the website.

Sunday Market at Westergas – Sunday 2 August

Come along to shop for jewellery, crafts, vintage clothing and more, taste the many different types of food on offer, or simply take a stroll past the many stalls selling unique products! Snacks, drinks, and a great atmosphere – what more could you want?

Ruige Rakkers: Technika10 at Pllek- Sunday 2 August​
During this fun workshop for kids ages 4-12 with Technika10, you’ll become an inventor and get straight to work using real tools! You’ll be drilling, hammering, sawing, fitting, measuring and working with lots of different materials and techniques. Find out more on Pllek’s website.

Robin Hood at the Bostheater (age 4+, in Dutch) 6-15 August

This summer, Het Kleine Theater is performing Robin Hood amongst the trees of Amsterdam’s Bostheater.

The classic tale of this social hero, who risks his own life to fight greed and inequality, is sadly still very relevant today. Now, too, is the time for action to combat poverty and inequality – to stop the country’s ruthless ruler!

Robin and her friends take up this fight in Sherwood Forest. They are helped by brave Marian, the King’s daughter. What can they do? They want no violence, no war. So they devise a clever ruse… Get your tickets on the Bostheater’s website.

Summer programme at Jeugdland

During the summer holidays, there’s something fun to do every day at Jeugland and you don’t need to book ahead. Climb and explore, race down the big slide hill, fly across the zip line, swing, seesaw or grab a go-kart. At Jeugdland, children are free to discover, build, climb, get messy and create their own adventures.

From 11:00 onwards you can build in the hut village. From 14:00 there is a free drop-in programme. Most of the barefoot sensory trail can be explored on your own. On Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings, the full trail is open with supervision.

Don’t forget your swimwear! Play in the shallow natural paddling pool, splash around in the stream under the zip line or take a swim in the natural swimming pool. Game On – Discover the world of video games at NEMO Science Museum

Video games are now bigger than the film and music industries combined. But how are they affecting us? Woeste Westen natural playground

Woeste Westen is a wonderful natural playground on the edge of Westerpark, where kids up to the age of 13 can play for free. The area is always open and playground attendants are on hand every day. Kids can have fun playing with sand and water, ride on a raft, play in a flowing stream, wander through reeds and copses, or simply enjoy nature in peace. Coffee, tea, juices and snacks are on sale and there’s a small terrace for parents. Woeste Westen will be hosting two Midzomer Mokum workshops on 14 August (details still tbc). Het Twiske nature reserve

Twiske is a great place just north of Amsterdam for a fun family day out: take a picnic and swim in the lake (check the water quality first), go for a bike ride or check out the nature playground or fun forest climbing. There are also two restaurants within the reserve.

Move Lab (Fridays only during the summer holidays)

Move Lab is an interactive exhibition for children aged 6-12 about mobility. Immerse yourself in the world of design; test your precision with a steady hand and experience the adrenaline of your very first driving lesson. At Move Lab, you’re always on the move! Much to do with bamboo at the Wereldmuseum

Looking for a fun activity to do with the kids in Amsterdam this summer? Visit the workshop at the heart of the museum. Techlab at the Marineterrein

Build a robot, program a minicomputer, set a racing boat in motion or discover what you can make with a 3D printer. At Techlab, it’s all about curiosity. Prince & Princess Days at Het Loo Palace

​

The Prince and Princess Days take place from 21 July to 20 August on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The Prince and Princess Days are all about being yourself. You can also dress up as one if you like, and anyone can participate.

On the bobbin track, the performances are played alternately on the (covered) large stage. There are fun activities and games on the lawn.

New Underwater World at SEA LIFE in Scheveningen

​

From Tuesday 14 July, SEA LIFE Scheveningen will reopen its doors after a renovation. And there is so much to see and experience. From a spectacular underwater tunnel to interactive experiences and new ways to explore the ocean.

Hidden in the heart of Amsterdam’s city centre is a small miracle: Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic Museum). Discover this well-kept 17th century canal house with its narrow corridors and stairs leading to historically furnished living quarters, kitchens and bedsteads, highlighting the entire church in the attic.

A visit to this special museum will be really fun with the Ladybug scavenger hunt (5-10 years) or an audio tour for older kids (10-12 years)!

Zoomer Evenings at Artis

​

This summer you can enjoy the Zoomer evenings with the whole family. From 11 July, ARTIS Park is open every Saturday until sunset until 29 August!

Walk past the animals in the twilight, enjoy the singing of birds and the rustle of the leaves. Young and old can experience how everything that lives is connected.

Admire the animals as the sun slowly goes down. Take your rug with you and lie down on one of the lawns. A different artist plays in the Music Tent every Saturday night. Enjoy the sounds surrounded by the special animal species. There are also extra activities for parents and children. Walk through the park with the tour guide and listen to the stories about ARTIS. Complete your outing with a delicious snack from the vegetarian food stalls.

Activities at OBA

Go on an adventure at an OBA near you. This summer, the doors of all 31 OBA branches are wide open to young explorers, dreamers and bookworms of all ages. Discover the most beautiful books for holidays, at home on the couch or under a tree in the park.

There is a lot to experience in the branch near you. For example, do the summer scavenger hunt, come and eat ice cream at one of the reading picnics, learn to draw comics or take a ballet lesson.

Sport4kidz is organizing 2 holiday sports camps during the summer holidays: an Outdoor Camp and a Sailing Camp.

1. Jeugdland Outdoor & Water sports camp – Raft building, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, archery and sailing are on the programme. All this combined with lots of water fun! The location of the camp is the water sports centre at Jeugdland.
2. Sailing Camp – This 5-day camp consists of getting on the water in a boat and mastering sailing in combination with outdoor and water sports such as SUPping, raft building, archery, GPS tracking and survival skills.

The camps are for children aged 6 to 12. All activities are supervised by enthusiastic instructors. Between activities, children will receive water, cordial and a snack such as fruit or an energy cookie. Find out more here.

JUMP freerun in Amsterdam & Uithoorn

Jump from place to place, swing on the stretch bar and land in the soft block box. At JUMP freerun, children can grow into real freerunners.

Beginners learn the basics of free running, jumping and safe landing under the guidance of professional trainers. KZ’s BIG 5 is exactly that—a full celebration of Lindy Hop culture, featuring live bands, DJ sets, and world-class musicians creating the kind of music you cannot help but move to. Visit exclusive gardens on Open Tuinen Dagen

Amsterdam’s canals are lined with gable houses known to be slim, high, and a little bit tilted but, altogether, beautiful. Unbeknownst to many, behind the buildings are exclusive gardens connected to homes of some notable families in Amsterdam. For 3 days only, gardens belonging to both private individuals and institutions will open their doors to the public for Open Tuinen Dagen 2026 on 19, 20, and 21 June. While kids under 12 can join for free, keep in mind that due to the delicate nature of these historical spaces, strollers and large backpacks are strictly prohibited—making it the perfect excuse to break out the baby carrier or enjoy a scenic walking adventure with older kids who love exploring secret paths. ARTIS Aquarium Grand Reopening

Following an extensive, four-year restoration project, the world-famous ARTIS Aquarium is finally throwing open its historic doors. As the oldest operating aquarium building of its kind in the world, the entirely modernized space now places a heavy emphasis on sustainability, marine conservation, and biodiversity. De Parade Theatre Festival from 27 July to 9 August

While this legendary, whimsical traveling theatre festival doesn’t roll its retro tents into Amsterdam’s Martin Luther King park until late July, securing your entry tickets and specific show passes early is highly recommended. De Parade is a spectacular, wonderland-like experience for families, famous for its colourful carousels, open-air food stalls, and a dedicated afternoon programme packed with interactive children’s theatre, secret fairytale tents, and creative workshops. Best of all, many of the visual performances and musical acts are completely “language no problem,” making it the ultimate summer highlight for international mamas and their little ones. Grachtenfestival in August

While it may be a few months ahead, tickets will be sold beginning 19 June. For ten days, several concerts and pop-ups will take place throughout Amsterdam. The festival will feature young and talented musicians in the fields of classical music and jazz.
