We’re back with a longer newsletter today as we’ll be taking a summer break for the next two weeks. With many museums putting on special programmes for children and lots of opportunities to enjoy the sunny weather at nature playgrounds in and around the city, there’s no shortage of fun family outings to enjoy during the rest of the holidays!

We’re still looking for volunteers!

Amsterdam Mamas is growing and we need passionate people to help us keep the community thriving. We’re currently looking for Writers, Graphic Designers, and Social Media Managers / Content Creators to join our volunteer team.

Events happening this weekend

Fluistervink boat tour of the Amsterdamse Bos – Saturday 1 August

You’ll be surrounded by the beautiful symphony of birdsong and frolicking waterfowl, and you might even catch a glimpse of other woodland animals seeking refuge along the banks. The experienced skipper will make sure you don’t miss a thing and will tell you all about the forest and its history.

Whether you’re a nature lover keen to embark on a new adventure or simply looking for a relaxing day out, the Fluistervink has something for everyone. Discover the hidden treasures of the Amsterdamse Bos whilst sitting comfortably on this open-top tour boat.

Mini Wildlife Safari at De Ceuvel – Sunday 2 August

Mini Safari “Join the Wild Bee Expedition and discover the mystery of the wild bee”

Time: be there at 10:50 I start 11:00 I end between 12:00-12:30

Language: Dutch, but other languages are welcome!

The recommended age is between 5 and 14, but younger and older children are also welcome. Participation is free, but please sign up in advance on the website.

Sunday Market at Westergas – Sunday 2 August

Come along to shop for jewellery, crafts, vintage clothing and more, taste the many different types of food on offer, or simply take a stroll past the many stalls selling unique products! Snacks, drinks, and a great atmosphere – what more could you want?

You’ll find the Sunday market at Westergas in Westerpark every first Sunday of the month. Find out more on Sunday Market’s website.

Ruige Rakkers: Technika10 at Pllek- Sunday 2 August
During this fun workshop for kids ages 4-12 with Technika10, you’ll become an inventor and get straight to work using real tools! You’ll be drilling, hammering, sawing, fitting, measuring and working with lots of different materials and techniques. Find out more on Pllek’s website.

Robin Hood at the Bostheater (age 4+, in Dutch) 6-15 August

This summer, Het Kleine Theater is performing Robin Hood amongst the trees of Amsterdam’s Bostheater.

The classic tale of this social hero, who risks his own life to fight greed and inequality, is sadly still very relevant today. Now, too, is the time for action to combat poverty and inequality – to stop the country’s ruthless ruler!

Robin and her friends take up this fight in Sherwood Forest. They are helped by brave Marian, the King’s daughter. What can they do? They want no violence, no war. So they devise a clever ruse… Get your tickets on the Bostheater’s website.

Summer programme at Jeugdland

During the summer holidays, there’s something fun to do every day at Jeugland and you don’t need to book ahead. Climb and explore, race down the big slide hill, fly across the zip line, swing, seesaw or grab a go-kart. At Jeugdland, children are free to discover, build, climb, get messy and create their own adventures.

From 11:00 onwards you can build in the hut village. From 14:00 there is a free drop-in programme. Most of the barefoot sensory trail can be explored on your own. On Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings, the full trail is open with supervision.

Don’t forget your swimwear! Play in the shallow natural paddling pool, splash around in the stream under the zip line or take a swim in the natural swimming pool. Game On – Discover the world of video games at NEMO Science Museum

Video games are now bigger than the film and music industries combined. But how are they affecting us? In this exhibition, you can explore how games are changing the way we play, socialise and express ourselves. It’s designed for both seasoned gamers and people who’ve never held a controller before. Woeste Westen natural playground

Woeste Westen is a wonderful natural playground on the edge of Westerpark, where kids up to the age of 13 can play for free. The area is always open and playground attendants are on hand every day. Kids can have fun playing with sand and water, ride on a raft, play in a flowing stream, wander through reeds and copses, or simply enjoy nature in peace. Coffee, tea, juices and snacks are on sale and there’s a small terrace for parents. Woeste Westen will be hosting two Midzomer Mokum workshops on 14 August (details still tbc). Het Twiske nature reserve

Twiske is a great place just north of Amsterdam for a fun family day out: take a picnic and swim in the lake (check the water quality first), go for a bike ride or check out the nature playground or fun forest climbing. There are also two restaurants within the reserve.

Move Lab (Fridays only during the summer holidays)

Move Lab is an interactive exhibition for children aged 6-12 about mobility. Immerse yourself in the world of design; test your precision with a steady hand and experience the adrenaline of your very first driving lesson. At Move Lab, you’re always on the move! Much to do with bamboo at the Wereldmuseum

Looking for a fun activity to do with the kids in Amsterdam this summer? Visit the workshop at the heart of the museum. Build, decorate, weave, wave, bend, chill out in the bamboo tower and expand your knowledge with facts and myths; suitable for everyone aged 6 and over. Included in your museum ticket. Techlab at the Marineterrein

Build a robot, program a minicomputer, set a racing boat in motion or discover what you can make with a 3D printer. At Techlab, it’s all about curiosity. This summer, children aged 6 to 12 will have the chance to explore, experiment and learn about technology through play! Every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon during the school holidays (until 15 August). Find out more on the Marineterrein website.

The Comedy Embassy, Pride Edition at Boom Chicago – 31 July & 2 August

Celebrate Pride with an international lineup of hilarious stand-up comedians!

Boom Chicago is holding a special Pride edition of The Comedy Embassy, featuring four top comedians, a buzzing bar, and an audience ready for a great night of laughs.

Come with friends, come on a date, or come solo. Either way, you’ll leave laughing! Get your tickets before they sell out!

Summer Evenings at de Hortus

Enjoy a lovely summer evening with live music in the city’s most beautiful gardens: on Sundays in July and August the Hortus botanical gardens will be open until 20:00.

Stroll through the beautifully blooming garden, explore the greenhouses or find a spot on our sunny terrace. With a drink in hand, you can listen to live music performed by various bands and ensembles: from classic jazz to passionate boleros. Live music starts at 17:30 in the Orangerie. Welcome back to this week’s Amsterdam Mamas Weekend Roundup of what’s happening and what to look forward to! With the school holidays now officially started, if you’re looking for ideas for summer fun with the kids, we’re here with some recommendations to make it easier for you! Events happening this weekend

Prince & Princess Days at Het Loo Palace

The Prince and Princess Days take place from 21 July to 20 August on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The Prince and Princess Days are all about being yourself. You can also dress up as one if you like, and anyone can participate.

On the bobbin track, the performances are played alternately on the (covered) large stage. There are fun activities and games on the lawn.

New Underwater World at SEA LIFE in Scheveningen

From Tuesday 14 July, SEA LIFE Scheveningen will reopen its doors after a renovation. And there is so much to see and experience. From a spectacular underwater tunnel to interactive experiences and new ways to explore the ocean.

Rain, wind or a hot summer day? SEA LIFE Scheveningen is almost completely covered and therefore a nice destination in every weather. Together you will walk along impressive aquariums, discover new interactive experiences and look out at the animals that live below and above the water.

From 4 July to 30 August, Pathé Kids Festival takes place in cinemas across the Netherlands. A festival for the whole family! The cinema turns into an adventurous playground with not only movies, but also scavenger hunts, surprises and photo opportunities.

Summer Holidays at Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder

Hidden in the heart of Amsterdam’s city centre is a small miracle: Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic Museum). Discover this well-kept 17th century canal house with its narrow corridors and stairs leading to historically furnished living quarters, kitchens and bedsteads, highlighting the entire church in the attic.

A visit to this special museum will be really fun with the Ladybug scavenger hunt (5-10 years) or an audio tour for older kids (10-12 years)!

Zoomer Evenings at Artis

This summer you can enjoy the Zoomer evenings with the whole family. From 11 July, ARTIS Park is open every Saturday until sunset until 29 August!

Walk past the animals in the twilight, enjoy the singing of birds and the rustle of the leaves. Young and old can experience how everything that lives is connected.

Admire the animals as the sun slowly goes down. Take your rug with you and lie down on one of the lawns. A different artist plays in the Music Tent every Saturday night. Enjoy the sounds surrounded by the special animal species. There are also extra activities for parents and children. Walk through the park with the tour guide and listen to the stories about ARTIS. Complete your outing with a delicious snack from the vegetarian food stalls.

Activities at OBA

Go on an adventure at an OBA near you. This summer, the doors of all 31 OBA branches are wide open to young explorers, dreamers and bookworms of all ages. Discover the most beautiful books for holidays, at home on the couch or under a tree in the park.

There is a lot to experience in the branch near you. For example, do the summer scavenger hunt, come and eat ice cream at one of the reading picnics, learn to draw comics or take a ballet lesson.

Baking, painting & a lot more at the Jewish Museum

At the Jewish Museum you take a journey through time. It begins 400 years ago, when the first Jews came to live in Amsterdam. Where did they come from? What customs did they take with them? And what do you see from that today?

Milkshake Festival is an open-minded electronic dance festival for all who love and has taken place each year in the city centre of Amsterdam since 2012. B! MS Summer Music School invites you to a week full of creativity and fun during the summer holidays, whether you would like to try a new instrument or want to improve your existing skills. At B! Sport4kidz Summer Sports Camps

Sport4kidz is organizing 2 holiday sports camps during the summer holidays: an Outdoor Camp and a Sailing Camp.

Jeugdland Outdoor & Water sports camp – Raft building, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, archery and sailing are on the programme. All this combined with lots of water fun! The location of the camp is the water sports centre at Jeugdland.
Sailing Camp – This 5-day camp consists of getting on the water in a boat and mastering sailing in combination with outdoor and water sports such as SUPping, raft building, archery, GPS tracking and survival skills.

The camps are for children aged 6 to 12. All activities are supervised by enthusiastic instructors. Between activities, children will receive water, cordial and a snack such as fruit or an energy cookie. Find out more here.

JUMP freerun in Amsterdam & Uithoorn

Jump from place to place, swing on the stretch bar and land in the soft block box. At JUMP freerun, children can grow into real freerunners.

Throughout the summer holidays there are fun activities, both for members and non-members (beginners). Camps, workshops, competitions, etc. are organized over several days. Beginners learn the basics of free running, jumping and safe landing under the guidance of professional trainers. Experienced freerunners work on even more techniques and spectacular moves this summer vacation. Of course, there is also plenty of space to train freely.

Amsterdam’s canals are lined with gable houses known to be slim, high, and a little bit tilted but, altogether, beautiful. Unbeknownst to many, behind the buildings are exclusive gardens connected to homes of some notable families in Amsterdam. For 3 days only, gardens belonging to both private individuals and institutions will open their doors to the public for Open Tuinen Dagen 2026 on 19, 20, and 21 June. While kids under 12 can join for free, keep in mind that due to the delicate nature of these historical spaces, strollers and large backpacks are strictly prohibited—making it the perfect excuse to break out the baby carrier or enjoy a scenic walking adventure with older kids who love exploring secret paths. Jazz at H’ART

An afternoon of jazz from talented musicians can be experienced at H’ART Museum this summer at the courtyard. The remaining days are as follows: 21 June, 28 June, 5 July & 12 July 2026. ARTIS Aquarium Grand Reopening

Following an extensive, four-year restoration project, the world-famous ARTIS Aquarium is finally throwing open its historic doors. As the oldest operating aquarium building of its kind in the world, the entirely modernized space now places a heavy emphasis on sustainability, marine conservation, and biodiversity. De Parade Theatre Festival from 27 July to 9 August

While this legendary, whimsical traveling theatre festival doesn’t roll its retro tents into Amsterdam’s Martin Luther King park until late July, securing your entry tickets and specific show passes early is highly recommended. De Parade is a spectacular, wonderland-like experience for families, famous for its colourful carousels, open-air food stalls, and a dedicated afternoon programme packed with interactive children’s theatre, secret fairytale tents, and creative workshops. Best of all, many of the visual performances and musical acts are completely “language no problem,” making it the ultimate summer highlight for international mamas and their little ones. Grachtenfestival in August

While it may be a few months ahead, tickets will be sold beginning 19 June. For ten days, several concerts and pop-ups will take place throughout Amsterdam. The festival will feature young and talented musicians in the fields of classical music and jazz. Keti Koti at Wereldmuseum Amsterdam

As part of the lead-up to Keti Koti, Wereldmuseum Amsterdam is hosting a special family programme on Sunday 7 June, inviting children to discover the stories, traditions and meaning behind the celebration of freedom. Young visitors can get creative by making their own bracelets decorated with kauri shells — a symbol often seen during the colourful Bigi Spikri parade — while learning more about the history and cultural significance of Keti Koti through hands-on activities. Music-loving families can head to Amsterdam Noord on Sunday 7 June for a cheerful SoWhat family concert at Het Zonnehuis. 12 jaar de Ceuvel | De Verjaardag!

De Ceuvel is turning 12! And you’re invited! The celebration will take place on 20 June at the creative waterfront hub in Amsterdam Noord. Kids can have fun getting their faces painted, listening to stories from Dahlia’s Magic Grandmother and jam along with Superjam. In addition to the organised programme, there is plenty of space for free play with oversized traditional games – think 2-metre Jenga – hula hoop, circus-style activities, and even canoe safaris for a small adventure on the water. De Parade – KinderParade

From 24 July to 9 August, the travelling theatre festival De Parade takes over Martin Luther King Park in Amsterdam, with its daily KinderParade programme running every afternoon. Children can wander through a playful outdoor festival filled with theatre performances, music acts, creative workshops, painting and building activities, and interactive installations designed especially for younger audiences. Classic festival elements like the swing ride, poffertjes stands and open play areas make it an easy, free-flowing afternoon where kids can explore, try things out and move between activities at their own pace. Tolhuistuin – Summer kids programme

Throughout July 2026, Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam Noord becomes a playful summer hub for families, with a rotating programme of free and low-cost kids’ activities in the garden. One of the highlights is the Fawaka Zomer Workshops (23–26 July), where children can get hands-on creative and educational making sessions — from cooking their own snacks and making natural beauty products to upcycling old materials into music and crafts. Events Happening This Weekend

Scoops by MOVE Lab

A high-energy, interactive pop-up event specifically designed for kids. MOVE Lab is challenging children to complete a series of engaging engineering and motion challenges. The best part? Once they complete the “Build and Race” challenge, they get to “Taste” their reward: a free scoop of ice cream. An event that perfectly balances a hands-on, active brain challenge with a sweet reward? Looks like a recipe for a fun afternoon! This is happening at Move Amsterdam on 30 & 31 May. Access to the pop-up space itself is free, though it doesn’t include the standard admission fee for the main MOVE Lab exhibition. You can find more information and planning details here.

Summer Ice Rink

Yup, you read that right. An ice rink in summer. Apparently, it’s possible with solar energy! From 29 May to 2 June, the grounds right next to the Olympic Stadium will open for ice skating from 12:00 to 18:00 daily. But not only that, they are also setting up a neighbourhood space with a film, snacks, and drinks on site. More information on how it works and what to expect can be found here.

Children’s Book Festival

Just off the ferry from Centraal Station, Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam Noord is hosting a Children’s Book Festival again for the 8th year. This is a vibrant family arts festival that brings the best children’s books of the past year to life. Instead of just static book readings, it features a highly interactive, curated mix of performances, music, theater, visual arts, fashion, and hands-on workshops tailored for kids aged 4 and up. Farmer’s Day at Elsenhove

From 13:00 – 16:30 on Sunday 31 May, children can visit Elsenhove for their Farmer’s Day. Kids can witness up close a sheep shearing demonstration, an insect tasting, stalls and fun games. Such a wonderful experience that the whole family can enjoy, all for free! Speelboerderij Elsenhove is in Amstelveen, not far from Amsterdam but cycling or coming by car is recommended. Heads up for June: A free family festival on the Bosbaan (19–21 June)

If you are planning out your June weekends, the Koninklijke Holland Beker rowing regatta is returning to the Amsterdamse Bos with a great, free family festival along the water. The shoreline is being taken over by the team behind the Rollende Keukens food festival, meaning it will have a really relaxed, bohemian vibe with live music, food stalls, a retro mini-Ferris wheel, and plenty of space for kids to play. It’s a nice, non-commercial option for a weekend hangout—and for anyone tracking the World Cup, they are also screening the Netherlands vs. Sweden match on Saturday evening. The Little Big Things Musical

The Royal Theatre Carré is exclusively hosting the acclaimed West End musical The Little Big Things this summer from 20 June to 16 August. Performed entirely in English with a spectacular live band, the show tells the deeply moving, true story of an ordinary teenager and his family learning to completely redefine their lives and find resilience after a sudden accident. It is a high-caliber production brought directly to Amsterdam, and because it’s a limited, exclusive run in the city, prime weekend family seating will sell out well in advance. Holland Festival

The annual Holland Festival returns from 3-28 June 2026, bringing its usual massive lineup of international performing arts to Amsterdam. While much of the programme leans toward avant-garde theatre and adult contemporary dance, the opening event on Wednesday 3 June is exceptionally family-friendly. Titled City of Floating Sounds, it kicks off as a giant, collective musical walk through the city toward the Royal Theatre Carré. Families use a free smartphone app that plays different fragments of a classical symphony as you walk, blending everyone’s phones together to create a giant, moving soundscape in the streets before a live orchestra takes over inside the theatre. Heroes Dutch Comic Con: Summer Edition

If you have kids (even pre-teens or teenagers) who are into gaming, anime, or movies, the summer edition of Dutch Comic Con is coming up at the Jaarbeurs Utrecht on 20 & 21 June. It gets busy, but the energy is great, and it’s a huge hit for families with older kids who want to check out the gaming tournaments, see the incredible costumes, or browse the dealer hall. Tickets for this always disappear weeks in advance, especially the family passes (which cover two adults and two youth tickets) or the individual youth tickets for kids aged 6 to 12. Parents need to take a beat, and by that we mean enjoy curated beats over your choice of specialty coffee. Since having kids, some parts of our lives have definitely changed. But with everything going on between work, home, and the endless loop of school drop-offs and pick-ups, a relaxed afternoon out to mingle and enjoy music while sipping coffee sounds tempting. If you are looking for a creative outlet to clear your head, this intuitive workshop pairs short-form writing with collage art in a relaxed, open-ended session.
