Hi there. Really interesting info for us as we are due to arrive in the Amsterdam area in May and have two girls, aged 12/yr 8 and 9/yr 5, who will be attending school. We have been advised to send them to an international school for 1 year, thereby giving them a year to pick up some Dutch, before entering them in the mainstream Dutch schools the following year. We are looking at living near Amsterdam Oud-Zuid (for AICS school) or maybe Hilversum (Dutch intl school of Hilversum) because of this recommendation. Any thoughts or advice on this?

We used packets of seeds (forget me nots) as a goodbye present with a sticker on too when my son changed schools. Found some Minion candy bar wrapper printables for psz which I put around ontbijtkoek bars and I even once made the cucumber crocodile with fruit sticks in it (google/pinterest it). I learned the hard way...... :-)

I don't look askance at children wearing helmets; I usually think they must be Canadian or American. I'm American, and my family in the US is in law-enforcement, too. I live here, though, and the rules of the road here are much different. Fewer bike-related head injuries, per capita, because it is a biking culture.

Comment on Coping with a Missed Miscarriage by Laeti

Hi, I just went through the same experience a week ago and i felt alone and misinformed all the way through this is a very tough experience, so i think that sharing our stories is sooo important.
When i had the diagnose confirmed that the baby was not alive (at 10 weeks of pregnancy) then i also had the 3 options.. I wanted a D&C (curretage) because i wanted this to be over, i wanted my morning sickness to disappear, i did not wanted to suffer, and i was scared of the miscarriage... but, because of easter and king's day they did not have any room for me, or i had to wait 10 more days for the surgery to be scheduled. I felt that i could not wait so long, that i wanted to just get back to my life and end this painful situation.. So i took the medecine prescription (cytotec) to have a miscarriage at home.
I was scared to take the medecine, to start this process and not being able to control it anymore, it was one of the most difficult things i had to do in my life.. But i did it, i took the medecine, i waited for the bleeding, but i had been misinformed about what would happen, "heavy period" they said "blood cloth" well it is more than that, i mean i don't want to chock anyone but at one point i had to google miscarriage to see pictures so i could be a little reassured that what i was losing was ok because the texture and size is quite disturbing comparing with having my period..and when i though i passed most of it, a day later i started to have contractions, i had a mini labour for an hour, i pushed and passed the "sac" on the toilets (size of an egg).
Luckily because i red a lot of stories from other women i knew it could happen , and things came naturally and immediately after i felt ok and relieved. I did not bled heavily, but the medication is strong, pain is quite intense, and not knowing what would happen was stressful.. BUT in my case it went well and my uterus is now cleared .
The only thing i did not expect was the immense sadness and emotional state i am in now.. Time will help me i am sure and everyday i feel a little bit better and stronger.
I really feel for all of you going through this, but you are not alone, and sharing your stories is helping you and others! love. L

I have no idea why any human would look askance at a child wearing a helmet-particularly in Amsterdam where there are obstacles everywhere. It doesn't matter how good a biker you are if a moped bumps into you or your bike malfunctions. Heads are the same in NL as in USA - they can break in both places. I get why the adults here don't wear helmets, but children can't make that choice. Good for you for keeping it up. I often feel like I'm the only freak on the school run with 2 kids in helmets but so it goes.
