The Mamas Recommend: Organic Markets in Amsterdam

December 14, 2015 By Moumita Bose 0 Comments

Whether you call it bio, eco or organic, the markets in Amsterdam have plenty to offer, from sustainable foods to cleaning supplies and clothes. We asked the Amsterdam Mamas to share their favourite organic markets with us. It makes for mouth-watering reading.

Labelling

When buying organic products, look for the EU organic farming logo, the "EKO" symbol in Dutch. Not all the markets are exclusively organic. You can find organic products such as pasta, bread, fish, meat, vegetables, gluten-free products, drinks and grains. So, you can get everything you need to prepare a meal! You can also expect organic personal-care products and household goods in the markets here.

Our Favourite Organic Markets

Centrum

Noordermarkt Farmers' Market (Saturday, 9 am - 4 pm) For organic food lovers, Noordermarkt Farmers' Market in the Jordaan is a great destination. This popular farmers market attracts buyers from the entire city. As well as organic produce, there are clothes, toys, furnishings and antiques. Since 1987, this trendy market has been a destination for fresh flowers, fruit and tasty pancakes. Look for the fresh mushrooms in all colours and shapes. The popular cafes and street bars nearby attract tourists and locals.

Farmer's Market Haarlemmerplein (Wednesday, 10 am - 5 pm) The stalls here offer a range of organic products, including sausages, eel, eggs, cheese and vegetables. As a special feature, you can also find people engaged in producing fresh food. This gives you scope to have a direct conversation with the chef.

Noord

Boerenmarkt Buikslotermeerplein (Saturday, 8 am - 6 pm) Boerenmarkt Buikslotermeerplein offers fresh organic food every Saturday in Amsterdam Noord. Beekeepers serve Flevo Honey in pots. Make sure you check out Vlaamsch Broodhuys, popular for its sourdough bread. Enjoy the bakery products made of 100% pure ingredients. These authentically-baked products are free from any additives. You will love the taste and unparalleled quality of freshly-baked pastries and bread.

West

Sunday Market: (Sunday, 12 pm - 6 pm) This market has plenty to offer, although you only some of the produce is organic. As well as food and drink, you can buy clothing, accessories, jewellery, ceramics, and art. The Sunday market is normally at the Westergasfabriek, in the Westerpark, and runs on the first Sunday of each month.

NeighbourFood Market: (Third Sunday of every month, 11 am -  6 pm) This is another market event in the Westergasfabriek where you can find some delicious, fresh and traditional foods. Bakers, butchers, juice-pressers and foodies gather here. Enjoy the finest drinks and fresh food in the stylish urban environment.

Zuid

ZuiderMRKT (Saturday, 9.30 am - 5 pm) Even though small in size compared to the other markets around, you can find plenty of fresh and organic products here. Sellers offer fresh sausages, cheese, bread, fruit and vegetables. Close to the Vondelpark, this market offers a neighbourhood atmosphere.

Various Locations

Pure Markt (Sunday, 11 am - 5/6 pm) Meet more than 90 artisan entrepreneurs presenting non-food assortments, fine drinks and food. You can enjoy the different tastes of Holland here. You will find a mixture of organic and non-organic produce so look for the labels. Order a beer, wine, or coffee and sample delicacies from around the world. Take home the fresh produce and enjoy the wholesome goodness. The solar-powered merry-go-round is an additional attraction here.
