One of our Mamas spills the beans on Amsterdam Mamas's best kept secret.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret. But please don’t tell anyone. It’s something that is so fun that if it got too big it just might not be as special. I’m talking of course about the Amsterdam Mamas Book & Film Club. I’d never been in a book club before, and thought it would be fun to find some like-minded people. Ofcourse I first posted on Amsterdam Mamas to see if anyone had any book club suggestions. Soon we realised we should just start our own Amsterdam Mamas group! And that was in July 2012.
Since then we have met up about every 6 weeks to discuss a book that someone has recommended. We tried lots of cafes and bars - some too busy, some too small. And then Emmy suggested we try the bar of Hotel V on the Weteringschans. It’s central, good value and we often have the place to ourselves with an open fire in the winter months. Perfect.
I’m really enjoying being part of the book club. You try books you may never have otherwise read. You meet a great group of bookish mamas from the Amsterdam Mamas tribe. And it’s so nice to hear stories about their little ones too, and their latest adventures in Amsterdam. We talk about the book (a bit), our lives (a lot), and have a great time. Here are some of the books we have read so far:
My favourite book so far from the book club has been “The Glass Castle” by Jeannette Walls - an amazing memoir about a very dysfunctional family. Rather hilariously I’d not seen the cover of the book as I’d downloaded it on my Kindle, so I’d thought the book was pure fiction and my only complaint was that the characters were a little exaggerated. To then find out the events and people were real, I had such admiration for the author’s resourcefulness in her life.
It wasn’t long after the book club started that we decided to add a film night once a month too. A big thanks to Courtenay McHugh and now Emily Houck for organizing these events. We all vote on a film and usually stay for a drink after. It’s a good chance to catch up on some films at last. There are some regulars and new faces each time we meet. It’s a night out I always look forward to. It's easy to join our closed Facebook Group here, where you can find all the information on our upcoming books and meet-ups! Hope to see you at the next one! But don’t let too many people in on the secret?
